George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

I enjoy reading the different types of poetry, especially when it is dealing with the word of God. I love reading about the book of Psalms because truly it deals with the reality of todayas society. It lets me know that I am not the only one going through in this life alone. There were many others before me. And just reading and studying the Holy Bible on these people who went through and how they came out on top really touches me deeply within my life to know that. During our destiny as we walk through life day by day, we all have a task or assignment to do, for we all have no excuse in our life of what we need to do through Godas grace and mercy. This I know that Jesus has paved the way for us to go forth in His will. Yet indeed it is a pathway that we have to choosea]Like Paul stated in Philippians 1: 19-26 (read these verses when you get a chance). I truly hope you enjoy what truth will bring in your life as it did mine when you begin to read this booka]

Addressed to all readers of poetry, this is a wide-ranging book about the poet's role throughout the last three centuries. It argues that a conception of the poets as both primitive and sophisticated emerged in the 1750s. Encouraged by the classroom when English literary works began to be studied in universities, this view continues to shape our own attitudes towards verse. Whether considering Ossian and the Romantics, Victorian scholar-gipsies, Modernist poetries of knowledge, or contemporary poetry in Britian, Ireland, and America, The Modern Poet shows how many successive generations of poets have needed to collaborate and to battle with academia.
