Excerpt from Discussion and Debate: An Introduction to Argument Upon the premise that many of the methods and pro cedures are common to both forms of argument, the author has integrated his treatment of the processes of discussion and debate. Except in a few descriptive chapters specifically con cerned with types of discussion and debate, the interrelation of the two forms is clearly shown. This has necessitated a few innovations. For example, a single brief is used to serve the purposes of both discussion and debate. This integration should help the beginning student to understand and apply basic procedures to differing argumentative situations. Excerpt from Argumentation and Debate The aim of this book is twofold: (1) to present briefly and clearly the theory of argumentation, (2) to furnish a sufficient number of complete debates for a thorough course in analysis and briefing. The discussion of argumentative theory has been condensed, therefore, and, while illustrated to the point of clearness, is suggestive rather than exhaustive, in order that it may be more fully tested in a study of the selections. Some emphasis has been placed upon the principles of logic for the reason that a knowledge of formal logic on the part of the student cannot be presumed. Furthermore, considerable space has been devoted to a study of evidence as it is found in the courts of law. This material will justify itself for the reason that the legal mind is the one best adapted to debate and for the reason that the debater who confines himself within the limitations imposed by the courts not only builds up a stronger argument but is also better prepared to destroy an opposing argument. The selections have been taken from great debates on critical and living issues of American history, politics, and law. For several reasons they will be found well adapted for analysis and briefing. In the first place, they were delivered by men long practiced in controversy, by men thoroughly trained in life's school of practical affairs. In the second place, the questions debated were at the time of the discussions, and still are, of vital moment to the American people. Hence they are of strong interest to every thoughtful student. Excerpt from Public Discussion and Debate This revision holds to the general purpose and emphasis of the first edition, which attempts to restate familiar argumentative principles in terms of present-day speech, logic, and psychology. Later research in the field of discussion and debate, however, and the improvement of techniques in the teaching of this sub j ect, have naturally led to important modifications and additions in the text. This second edition should be more useful to the student than the first one. Those teachers familiar with the older book will note that this new version further strengthens the character of the book as a text on discussion as contrasted with technical debate. Contest debating is not neglected; on the contrary, it is represented in a fresh chapter. New chapters, however, on special types of debate, radio debating and discussion, and committee and public discussion equip the student for proficiency in wider applications of persuasive speaking, and especially in cooperative thinking. Speech educators incline more and more to committee and panel discussion as an agency for the promotion of open - mindedness. The assumption of both editions is that intelligent discussion is the ally of free government. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
