Excerpt from Directorium Chori Anglicanum: The Choral Service of the United Church of England and Ireland But in the modern accepted version of Tallis, not only is the plain-song sometimes placed in the treble, sometimes in the tenor, and at other times completely obliterated, but the number of vocal parts varies from four to five, and a part of the Litany is included, which it is well known Tallis did not set at all, as well as a Response which was not added till some time after the death of the composer, who is made responsible for the whole service.
