Excerpt from A Digest of Moohummudan Law on the Subjects to Which It Is Usually Applied by British Courts of Justice in India, Vol. 1: Compiled and Translated From Authorities in the Original Arabic, With an Introduction and Explanatory Notes; Containing the Doctrines of the Hanifeea Code of Jurisprudence The extracts of which the Futa'wa Alumgeeree is com posed are always given in that work, so far as I have had opportunities of observing, in the words of the original writers. This is the case even when works like the Hidayah are quoted, which contain comments and arguments of the writer; though the futwa, or decision, is given without the comment or argument. Many of the cases are not likely to occur again, and may be omitted without breaking the continuity of the work, or impairing its general utility. In making my selections from it, I have followed the example of the compilers, in somuch that I have seldom attempted to give the meaning of the original writers in my own words. I have preferred to allow them, as it were, to speak for themselves, and have adhered to literal translation as strictly as the different idioms of the Arabic and English languages would admit.
