Zur Entstehung des Bandes: Der Band stellt die erste Veröffentlichung im Rahmen der im Jahre 2009 gegründeten Forschungsplattform "Wiener Osteuropaforum" dar. Darin sind jene Beiträge versammelt, die aus einer im Sommersemester 2009 in Zusammenarbeit der Institute für Slawistik und für Osteuropäische Geschichte der Universität Wien gehaltenen Ringvorlesung hervorgingen. Die Absicht der Herausgeber war es, die Verbindung der Dimensionen Gesellschaft, Text und Musik und deren Bedeutung für politische Mobilisierung und politisches Handeln in Ost- und Südosteuropa darzustellen. Als Zeitraum wurde dabei die Epoche vom ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart gewählt. Räumlich wurden die Beiträge nach nationalen Gesellschaften in ihrer staatlichen Verfasstheit gegliedert.

Matthew Head explores the cultural meanings of Mozart's Turkish music in the composer's 18th-century context, in subsequent discourses of Mozart's significance for 'Western' culture, and in today's (not entirely) post-colonial world. Unpacking the ideological content of Mozart's numerous representations of Turkey and Turkish music, Head locates the composer's exoticisms in shifting power relations between the Austrian and Ottoman Empires, and in an emerging orientalist project. At the same time, Head complicates a presentist post-colonial critique by exploring commercial stimuli to Mozart's turquerie, and by embedding the composer's orientalism in practices of self-disguise epitomised by masquerade and carnival. In this context, Mozart's Turkish music offered fleeting liberation from official and proscribed identities of the bourgeois Enlightenment.

This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. And at the centre of this turbulent period of European intellectual and literary history stands the French Revolution.
