This rich sampling of Spanish poetry, prose, and drama includes more than seventy selections from the works of more than forty writers, from the anonymous author of the great medieval epic The Poem of the Cid to such 20th-century masters as Miguel de Unamuno. The original Spanish text of each work appears with an excellent English translation on the facing page. The anthology begins with carefully selected passages from such medieval classics as The Book of Good Love by the Archpriest of Hita and Spain's first great prose work, the stories of Count Lucanor by Juan Manuel. Works by writers of the Spanish Renaissance follow, among them poems by the Marqués de Santillana and excerpts from the great dialogue novel La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas. Spain's Golden age, ca. 1550-1650, an era which produced its great writers, is represented by the mystical poems of St. Teresa, passages from Cervantes' Don Quixote and scenes from Tirso de Molina's The Love-Rogue, the drama that introduced the character of Don Juan to the world, along with other well-known works of the period. A cavalcade of stirring poems, plays and prose selections represent Spain's rare literary achievements of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The translations were chosen for their accuracy and fidelity to the originals. Among the translators are Lord Byron, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edward FitzGerald and John Masefield. As a treasury of masterly writing, as a guide for the student who wants to improve his or her language skills and as a compact survey of Spanish literature, this excellent anthology will provide hours of pleasure and fruitful study.

Excerpt from Dictionary of Quotations: Spanish No modern literature can compare with that of Spain for its wealth of quotable aphorisms; and the difficulty in compiling a Dictionary of Spanish Quotations is not so much what to include as what to omit. The sententious proverb, derived straight from Oriental sources through the Hebrew and the Arabic, is deeply rooted in the very nature of the Spanish people, and Sancho Panza, whose common speech was largely composed of these clear-cut gems of wisdom, was but a whimsical exaggeration of a prevailing type not yet extinct amongst the unlettered peasantry. The Jewish proverbs of Sem Tob, and the more Christian aphorisms of Juan Manuel, Clemente Sanchez and the Marquis of Santillana, as well as the sententious didactics of the Arch priest of Hita, and a score of other writers quoted in the present Dictionary, all indicate the general trend of Spanish thought from the birth of Castilian literature to the present time. The gay cynicism of the French and Italian philosophy finds no echo in a literature which received its renewed inspiration from Eastern peoples at a time when the classical tradition had almost disappeared from the land. Throughout the quotations in this Dictionary there runs the same philosophic thread. The object is always didactic, and the teaching is Biblical in its tone and directness. The morality inculcated is based upon moderation, modesty, reticence, humility, patience; all of them oriental virtues, and precisely those which for ages Spaniards themselves have conspicuously lacked. But, perhaps, for this very reason, they have remained the counsel of perfection held high by the national literature, side by side with the exaggerated amativeness, inflated chivalry and spiritual pride, which have been the racial inheritance of the people.
