Excerpt from Pitman's Dictionary Of Commercial Correspondence: In English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, And Russian The aim of this book is to enable students of commercial correspondence to overcome the difficulties encountered by all those whose task it is to express themselves in a foreign tongue in the shortest possible time. With this object in view, commercial expressions have been supplied in the languages dealt with which would be sought in vain in ordinary dictionaries, and turns of speech have been rendered in such a way as to avoid all difficulty in their application, and to remove all doubt as to the correctness of the methods of expression. The letters at the end of the book treat of subjects of daily occurrence in commercial life, and many of them can be used just as they stand, while, for special cases, they may be easily altered with the help of the dictionary and made to suit the purpose required. These letters will not only be of practical value to the correspondent, but will also provide an opportunity for the students in commercial schools to become thoroughly acquainted with the usual forms of the different languages. As to the German, the modern orthography has been adopted, but in certain words of foreign derivation, where the spelling is optional, the original form has been preserved. Thus, the German words for "acceptance" and cognate expressions have been written with "cc" instead of "kz," e. g., "Accept, acceptieren," instead of "Akzept, akzeptieren." It is believed that Appendix II, which deals with Russian declensions and conjugations, will be exceedingly helpful to the students of that language.
