The definitive abridgement, this version of Great Expectations contains the full plot and characters, and also retains the core of the feeling and humor of Dickens' classic novel. It's crafted for the modern reader to be much easier to follow along with than the original, but it is not meant as a replacement. Hopefully you will be inspired to read the original after reading this abridgement. This is the story of Pip, a poor boy in Victorian England, who dreams of becoming a wealthy gentleman and winning the heart of the beautiful and proud Estella. Suddenly, a mysterious benefactor makes his dream come true by making him rich. But, who is it? Will his expectations for his future turn out the way he always hoped they would?

Charles Dickens, a man so representative of his age as to have become considered synonymous with it, demands to be read in context. This book illuminates the worlds - social, political, economic and artistic - in which Dickens worked. Dickens's professional life encompassed work as a novelist, journalist, editor, public reader and passionate advocate of social reform. This volume offers a detailed treatment of Dickens in each of these roles, exploring the central features of Dickens's age, work and legacy, and uncovering sometimes surprising faces of the man and of the range of Dickens industries. Through 45 digestible short chapters written by a leading expert on each topic, a rounded picture emerges of Dickens's engagement with his time, the influence of his works and the ways he has been read, adapted and re-imagined from the nineteenth century to the present.

A Christmas Carol has long been a favourite book as I've no doubt it is one of yours. When, some years ago, I discovered this extraordinary abridgement by Charles Dickens, which he made for his public performances, I decided to make a faithful transcription of it. All stands exactly as written, as abridged by Charles Dickens himself. It also occurred to me that actors, as well as readers, would be interested in a shorter version of this famous tale, a performance version, especially one personally condensed by Charles Dickens, and suitable for acting or reading on a cold winter's night to friends and family.
