Our program involves development and applications of second-order optical materials which are also multifunctional, i.e., they exhibit more than one functionality and in some cases, new properties derived from a combination of more than one functionality . We specifically focused on applications in electro-optic modulation and photorefracitivity. Our effort has focused on developing electro-optic chromophores which offer extended transparency in the visible (to 633 nm), large r-coefficient, as well as high thermal and temporal stability of electrically poled alignment. Earlier we have developed an electro-optic chromophore, APSS, which was processed using an isocyanate containing liquid polymer to produce a thermally stable electrically poled polyurethane based electro-optic polymer. In order to further improve on optical losses in the visible range (633nm), enhance thermal stability and achieve a better control of the poling process, we have made chemical modifications and synthesized a related chromophore APSAS. This chromophore containing linkable four hydroxy sites, permits the usage of a smaller isocyanate, tolulene diisocyanate, with broader optical transparency, to produce rigid cross-linked polyurethane structures. In addition, we tested waveguide parameters of these chromophores. A waveguide modulator was fabricated using APSS to study processing optimization of this modulator. APSS and APSAS also exhibit multifunctionality: A strong two-photon absorption, photobleaching and up-converted emission. APSS exhibits photobleaching when illuminated with high peak power femtosecond pulse lasers. Utilizing this photobleaching 3D optical data storage was illustrated with a Buggs Bunny cartoon video in which each movie frame was stored in layers 5 microns apart. The two-photon exited photosensitization using APSS was also use for a new approach of two-photon photo.

Electro-optic chromophores (FTC and CLD) were synthesized in bulk (kilogram) quantities and were distributed to the participants of this program project (Steier, Fetterman, Chen, and TACAN/IPITEK). They were also provided to other Department of Defense programs including to researchers at China Lake (Navy), Redstone Arsenal (Army), and Wright Paterson (Air Force Research Laboratory) and to various industrial programs (e.g., Lockheed Martin) participating in DoD research programs. FTC and CLD chromophores were systematically modified to improve their properties, including for lattice hardening to stabilize electro-optic activity for operation at elevated temperatures and photon flux levels. Over 100 variants of these chromophores were synthesized and were evaluated. Reaction yields were optimized by systematically variation of reaction conditions. New chromophores were also synthesized at the University of Washington including those involving incorporation of significantly improved chromophores. These new materials involve factors of 1.5-2.0 improvement over FTC and CLD chromophores in terms of electro- optic activity at telecommunication wavelengths. They also have proven more amendable to being processed into hardened material lattices and have exhibited significantly improved thermal and photochemical stability. The role of chromophore structure and the use of radical (and singlet oxygen) scavengers have been investigated. The results can be utilized to fabricate materials with significantly improved photochemical stability.

The goal of Phase I was to develop high-mu-beta chromophores with low absorption loss and high bulk EO nonlinearity at 980 nm. The Phase I work focused on second-order optical nonlinearities in dipolar chromophores of the general form (electron donor)-(pi-bridge)-(electron acceptor). Six different methods of 'engineering' such material were explored. Two of the methods studied focused on improving the electron donor functional group; two focused on improving the pi-bridge architecture; and two focused on improving the electron acceptor functional group. Four showed sufficient promise to warrant further consideration in Phase II. Based on these results, we believe that the feasibility of developing a protocol for systematically designing blue-shifted chromophores with high bulk nonlinearities has been demonstrated. Moreover, by exploring not one, but several, different and promising materials systems, we have laid a solid theoretical and experimental foundation for the Phase II work, greatly improving the chances of technical and commercial success.

Two-photon absorption spectra have been measured for bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives with varying conjugation lengths and end groups. Large two-photon absorptivities are observed via nanosecond nonlinear transmission measurements in comparison to picosecond nonlinear transmission and two-photon excited fluorescence methods, which suggests a large contribution of excited-state absorption to the nanosecond nonlinear transmission results. Chromophores with conformationally locked bridges have been synthesized and the optical nonlinearity and thermal stability has been examined. It was found that relative to the normal polyene bridges, chromophores with confirmationally locked bridges exhibit improved thermal stability without a significant change in optical nonlinearity. A series of chromophores containing diarylamino donors have been synthesized and exhibit large optical nonlinearities, good thermal-thermal stabilities and enhance photochemical stabilities relative to compounds with dialkylamino donors. Functionalized versions of these chromophores have been synthesized for covalent incorporation into high performance polymers, for electro-optic applications.
