This book focuses on effective methods for assessing the accuracy of both coordinate measuring systems and coordinate measurements. It mainly reports on original research work conducted by Sladek’s team at Cracow University of Technology’s Laboratory of Coordinate Metrology. The book describes the implementation of different methods, including artificial neural networks, the Matrix Method, the Monte Carlo method and the virtual CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), and demonstrates how these methods can be effectively used in practice to gauge the accuracy of coordinate measurements. Moreover, the book includes an introduction to the theory of measurement uncertainty and to key techniques for assessing measurement accuracy. All methods and tools are presented in detail, using suitable mathematical formulations and illustrated with numerous examples. The book fills an important gap in the literature, providing readers with an advanced text on a topic that has been rapidly developing in recent years. The book is intended for master and PhD students, as well as for metrology engineers working at industrial and research laboratories. It not only provides them with a solid background for using existing coordinate metrology methods; it is also meant to inspire them to develop the state-of-the-art technologies that will play an important role in supporting quality growth and innovation in advanced manufacturing.

Since John Bosch edited and published the first version of this book in 1995, the world of manufacturing and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and coordinate measuring systems (CMSs) has changed considerably. However, the basic physics of the machines has not changed in essence but have become more deeply understood. Completely revised and updat

Working at the nano-scale demands an understanding of the high-precision measurement techniques that make nanotechnology and advanced manufacturing possible. Richard Leach introduces these techniques to a broad audience of engineers and scientists involved in nanotechnology and manufacturing applications and research. He also provides a routemap and toolkit for metrologists engaging with the rigor of measurement and data analysis at the nano-scale. Starting from the fundamentals of precision measurement, the author progresses into different measurement and characterization techniques. The focus on nanometrology in engineering contexts makes this book an essential guide for the emerging nanomanufacturing / nanofabrication sector, where measurement and standardization requirements are paramount both in product specification and quality assurance. This book provides engineers and scientists with the methods and understanding needed to design and produce high-performance, long-lived products while ensuring that compliance and public health requirements are met. Updated to cover new and emerging technologies, and recent developments in standards and regulatory frameworks, this second edition includes many new sections, e.g. new technologies in scanning probe and e-beam microscopy, recent developments in interferometry and advances in co-ordinate metrology. Demystifies nanometrology for a wide audience of engineers, scientists, and students involved in nanotech and advanced manufacturing applications and research Introduces metrologists to the specific techniques and equipment involved in measuring at the nano-scale or to nano-scale uncertainty Fully updated to cover the latest technological developments, standards, and regulations

ABSTRACT: Hybrid Coordinate Measuring Machines belong to a new generation of CMMs that use a combination of mechanical and vision probes. Despite the wide potential and future market of these machines, unfortunately, no significant work has been completed in developing standardized tests for either vision or hybrid CMMs. The goal of this thesis was to develop techniques for the self-calibration of these machines and to develop acceptance, accuracy, and interim testing for machine accuracy degradation. This thesis involves tests conducted on the Werth CMM which is a high accuracy hybrid machine. Tests suited for performance testing of these machines, such as the temperature variation error, repeatability, linear displacement accuracy, bi-directional length measurement capability, etc. were developed for the vision probe. These tests were basically some variants of the ASME B89.4.1-1997[9] counterparts of these tests for the contact probes. Field of view calibration being an important concern for vision machines, a test that can quantify reproducibility of the camera was developed using self-calibration algorithms. For establishing correlation between mechanical and optical datums, a check standard that uses both mechanical and optical datums was designed.
