Magnet schools have developed strong national and local constituencies among parents and educators, who see them as vehicles for bringing equity and academic excellence to all students. Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), families have more freedom than ever before to make decisions about how their children are educated. Thanks to a wide array of public school choice options, including charter and magnet schools, families can customize their children's learning, which is translating into improved academic achievement throughout the nation. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are cultural achievements that reflect our humanity, power our economy, and constitute fundamental aspects of our lives as citizens, consumers, parents, and members of the workforce. Providing all students with access to quality education in the STEM disciplines is important to our nation's competitiveness.
