The aim of this book is to reveal, through data and the use of simple economic concepts, the mistakes that abound in the discourses surrounding the steel industry. Its main objective is to dispel, through analysis of the officially published data, the many myths that are perpetuated by the policy makers and even the industry in order to benefit a small coterie of large firms and how through such favours the Indian steel industry is all set to lose out in terms of margins, products and growth in technology.

The developments in the steel industry through the reform period are central to those changes, illuminative of them, and of immense significance in themselves. This book throws new light on these historic changes for Chinese and foreign readers alike.' - From the foreword by Ross Garnaut, University of Melbourne, Australia

In this paper we propose a new indicator of monthly global real economic activity, named world steel production. We use world steel production, OECD industrial production index and Kilian's rea index to forecast world real GDP, and key commodity prices. We find that world steel production generates large statistically significant gains in forecasting world real GDP and oil prices, relative to an autoregressive benchmark. A forecast combination of the three indices produces statistically significant gains in forecasting world real GDP, oil, natural gas, gold and fertilizer prices, relative to an autoregressive benchmark.

The optimal rate of transfer of technology is briefly analyzed and a systems approach to technological education is covered. An essay in the development of operator interface techniques is given. A section of the text provides the requirements of an ideal teaching system for microcomputers. The book will provide useful information to engineers, sociologists, economists, computer programmers, students and researchers in the field of science.
