Children display a wide range of symptoms in the wake of experiencing trauma. Working as an art therapy intern in a residential treatment facility, I have been able to see firsthand the way that children who have grown up in unsafe environments experience difficulties with concentration, comprehension, and developing safe and appropriate interpersonal boundaries. In my own artistic inquiry, I have found video and digital media to be inherently empowering media, providing opportunities to examine and reconfigure the personal narratives that construct my sense of self. The use of video as a means to address the treatment goals of children who have experienced trauma is supported in a review of relevant literature. Using emergent design, this thesis employed a qualitative, case-study approach to explore the therapeutic uses of video and digital media in a residential setting for children and adolescents. This study reveals the way one child was able to use video media to give voice to thoughts and emotions that he was unable to express to the people who had inspired them. Other children have used digital media to create a video scrapbook, or Visual History Project, that they could present to peers and staff before discharge from residential treatment. Finally, I explore the possibility of combining video art therapy and narrative therapy, offering suggestions as to how and why these two modalities might be successfully joined. The outcomes of this research indicate that these media might be used to generate unique therapeutic gains with young clients. Further study is warranted.
