Liquid diffusion coefficients for systems approximating gas chromatographic sample -- liquid phase systems were determined by using multiple internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy. An expression for the diffusion coefficient as a function of the change of concentration with time was developed from Fick T s second lav; and Jost T s treatment for diffusion into a slab. By using cell covers designed for this project (for FMIR solid sampling cell) and by turning the spectrophotometer (Infracord) on its side, it was possible to measure the change of concentration of solute (fed as vapour in carrier gas) in a layer of solvent with time spectrophotometrically and to thus determine the diffusion coefficient of the solute- solvent system. The systems used in the project included those of different solutes in fluorolube and acetone in solvents of varying viscosities. An attempt was made to qualitatively evaluate the data by correlation with known values and values expected from empirical expressions. The results indicate that this method provides qualitative values for diffusion coefficients with main errors due to the preparation of the solvent layer.

Diffusion in Liquids: A Theoretical and Experimental Study aims to discuss the principles, applications, and advances in the field of diffusion, thermal diffusion, and thermal conduction in liquid systems. The book covers topics such as the principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics; diffusion in binary and multicompetent systems; and experimental methods of studying diffusion processes in liquids. Also covered in the book are topics such as the theoretical interpretations of diffusion coefficients; hydrodynamic and kinetic theories; and diffusion in electrolyte systems. The text is recommended for physicists who would like to know more about the concepts and updates in the field of diffusion.

The transport property which is most fundamentally related to forces between unlike molecules is the ordinary diffusion due to concentration gradients. Unfortunately, this property and its dependence upon temperature have not been systematically studied experimentally, with the result that the literature does not contain the data necessary to obtain good force constants for the introduction of unlike molecuels. The present work describes an experimental method for determining diffusion coefficients, based on the variation of thermal conductivity with composition in binary mixtures which is capable of being used over a wide range of temperature. Experimental results for the systems n-butane-hydrogen, sulfur hexafluoride-hydrogen, argon-hydrogen, and argon-helium are given for a temperature range from 10°C. to 140°C.
