When they speak to the one and only eyewitness to the murder, they realize they are dealing with something supernatural. Speaking with the remaining priest from the parish, Johann and Robert learn of an accidental death from several years earlier. Not only does Johann now question the integrity of the priest, but it causes him to wonder if there is a vengeful spirit at work here. Burning the remains of the corpse tied to the suspected vengeful spirit should solve the problem, and with the priest's help, Johann and Robert locate the burial site, and do just that. But when another victim is claimed after the corpse is burned, they realized something more powerful is in play...a demon. The fight to exorcise the demon reaches fever pitch. Paul Wilkes has written an elegant, prescriptive, secular book—a spiritual gem—that reinvents the power of confession for a contemporary audience. Confession is the foundation of religion, the essence of mental health. It is listening to the voice within to follow the path to honest and conscious living. And for thousands of years people have used the power of confession to find their best selves. Liberating confession from the confessional, The Art of Confession draws on traditions as old as ancient Greece and as modern as psychoanalysis as diverse as Judaism, Catholicism, and Islam, to show readers how to incorporate a confessional practice into their daily lives. There are visualizations, spiritual exercises, prompts, and meditations; private confessions, direct confessions, psychological confessions. Accompanied throughout by a wise “confessional chorus”—a rabbi, a priest, a psychiatrist, a nun, whose points-of-view complement and augment the text—The Art of Confession is an antidote to our age of oversharing, where we happily broadcast the minutest details of our lives in public, yet never find the time to discover the risk, relief, and ultimately the renewal that real, considered self-reflection offers.

Confession is a crucial ritual of the Catholic Church, offering absolution of sin and spiritual guidance to the faithful. Yet this ancient sacrament has also been a source of controversy and oppression, culminating, as prize-winning historian John Cornwell reveals in The Dark Box, with the scandal of clerical child abuse. Drawing on extensive historical sources, contemporary reports, and first-hand accounts, Cornwell takes a hard look at the long evolution of confession. The papacy made annual, one-on-one confession obligatory for the first time in the 13th century. In the era that followed, confession was a source of spiritual consolation as well as sexual and mercenary scandal. During the 16th century, the Church introduced the confession box to prevent sexual solicitation of women, but this private space gave rise to new forms of temptation, both for penitents and confessors. Yet no phase in the story of the sacrament has had such drastic consequences as a historic decree by Pope Pius X in 1910. In reaction to the spiritual perils of the new century, Pius sought to safeguard the Catholic faithful by lowering the age at which children made their first confession from their early teens to seven, while exhorting all Catholics to confess frequently instead of annually. This sweeping, inappropriately early imposition of the sacrament gave priests an unprecedented and privileged role in the lives of young boys and girls—a role that a significant number would exploit in the decades that followed. A much-needed account of confession’s fraught history, The Dark Box explores the sources of the sacrament’s harm and shame, while recognizing its continuing power to offer consolation and reconciliation.

Excerpt from The Confessional It is well to remember that these admonitions and penances must not be given to every penitent as they are written out; they are only hints to confessors, who are to judge for them selves what will suit hic at wane, and who are to modify them according to the circumstances and dispositions of their penitents. Not all things are good for all, nor are all things expedient at all nines. The Wise Man says: All shall be well approved in their time. (eccli. Xxxix. Omnia mecum porlo. This book may properly be called a Vade-mecum. The Rt. Rev. T. Mullen, D. D., Bishop of Erie, says of The Confessional: Priests will find this book a most useful companion in the library and pulpit, as well as in the confessional. To priests, particularly, who are engaged in missionary duty, 'the Confessional' will be eminently serviceable, as it will enable them to make their meditation with fruit; or if so occupied with other duties, as is often the case, that they find it impossible to prepare an instruction for the people, they need only read over for a few minutes attentively the meditation assigned in 'the Confessional for the Sunday or feastday they are celebret ing, to acquit themselves in a way that will satisfy their own consciences and edify the faithful.
