Excerpt from Trumbull and Beebe's Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Small Fruits, Evergreens, Shrubs, Roses, Etc., 1892 When to Plant is also a matter governed by local conditions, but usually the spring Will be found to be the best time for stock generally, and particularly so for evergreens. The subject of How to Plant has been so universally written upon that any further remarks from us hardly appear necessary. Expecting, however, to reach some that are not yet the possessors of works on this subject, we would say to plant the trees as near as pos sible in the position they stood in the nursery as regards depth. In the case of deciduous trees and shrubs, more or less pruning is necessary, the extent of it to be regulated by the condition of the roots. The holes should at all times be large enough to admit the roots freely in their natural position. Staking, mulching, and watering for the first summer after transplanting will add greatly to the chances of success and ultimate gratification of the purchaser. With these remarks we submit our new catalogue to the public, returning, at the same time, sincere thanks for the generous patronage heretofore bestowed on us, and earnestly requesting a continuance of the same, feeling certain of our ability, under ordinary circum stances, to satisfy all who may favor us with their orders. Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, Vines and Plants, Cultivated and for Sale T IS once more our pleasure to present to our friends and patrons a new edition of our descriptive catalogue OF fruit and ornamental trees, etc, and in doing so we tender to them our sincere thanks for the many expressions of encouragement and substantial aid they have given us. We will endeavor in the future, as we have in the past, by strict personal attention to business, to merit their patronage and good will. The lamented Downing said, in the introduction to his work on fruit and fruit-trees, that A man born on the banks of one of the noblest and most fruitful rivers in America, and whose best days have been spent in gardens and orchards, may perhaps be pardoned for talking about fruit-trees. We must claim indulgence, for similar reasons. Forty of the best years of our life have been devoted to the nursery and fruit - growing business and if we seem to urge these subjects beyond the rules of propriety, our apology is, that we think we are working in a good cause and for the good of our fellow-men. He says further In deed, the subject deserves not a few, but many words. Fine fruit is the flower of commodi ties. It is the most perfect union of the useful and the beautiful that the earth knows. Trees full of soft foliage blossoms fresh with spring beauty and finally fruit, rich, bloom-dusted, melting and luscious. Such are the treasures of the orchard and the garden temptingly offered to every landholder in this bright and sunny though temperate climate. We are pleased to note an increasing interest throughout the Whole country in the cultivation of the useful and beautiful. Both fruits and flowers are more highly appreciated by the masses than formerly, and we regard it as a most happy indication, not only in the effect it will have upon the health of the body, but also in the softening influence it will have on the harsher feelings of our nature. Excerpt from Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Small Fruits, Vines, Roses, Shrubs, Etc., Etc In both standard and dwarf trees, it will be usually found a safe rule to cut back in pruning at transplanting one-half the growth of the previous season. The ends of the larger roots should be made smooth with a sharp knife where they have been roughly cut by the spade in digging, as new roots will form and the injured parts heal more readily with this attention. Planting - The holes should be dug large enough in the first place to receive the roots of the tree without' cramping or bending them from their natural posi tion. The tree having been properly pruned, should be held upright and the earth filled in about the roots, the finest and best soil from the surface being worked in among them, filling every space and bringing every root fully in contact with it. In extremely dry weather a pail of water may be poured upon the earth, to settle it about the roots, but this is seldom necessary. Finish the planting by placing soil enough about the tree to raise it somewhat higher than elsewhere, and press the soil carefully down with the foot. Care must be taken against planting too deep; when the earth settles about the tree it should stand at the same height as when in the Nursery, When set in autumn it is well to raise a mound of earth about the trees a foot or more in height. This will keep them from being swayed by the winds or thrown out by the frost during the winter. It should be removed in the spring. In planting dwarf trees the stock on which they are budded, and no more, should be under ground. They will then stand firmly and will not lose their dwarf character by the rooting of the standard stock. Staking - If trees are tall or in exposed situations, they should be supported by stakes to prevent injury from the action of the wind. Staking is done in the best manner by driving two strong stakes firmly in the ground, one on each side of the tree about a foot distant from it, and fastening the tree between them with bands of straw or other soft material, so that it may be kept in an upright position without chafing until the roots obtain a firm hold upon the soil. This is a fact so well established we suppose none will deny it; but it is equally certain that fruit trees grown in the northwest will become diseased in forty-nine out of fifty cases, for reasons which we have stated, nor is it in the power of man to hinder this result, since the climate 'is such that it cannot be otherwise.
