Excerpt from Descensus Averno and Other Poems N ow rising high, revealing by their glare The dreary realms of sorrow and despair; Now falling low, and darkening, as they fall Hell's gloomy plains and loathsome caverns all Expectant, mute and motionless, alone In solemn state upon his ebon throne Beelzebub, the Prince of Hell, awaits With anxious gaze toward the frowning gates, The coming, long delayed, of Satan; him Whose lordly presence in these regions dim Serves every fear among his hosts to quell; Whose lengthened absence makes a void in hell. Excerpt from Minto, and Other Poems The opening poem in this collection was written in the spring of 1845, while the author was a member of the Senior class of Yale College, and delivered, by appointment, before the Society of Brothers in Unity, April 9, of the same year. It has since, on a few occasions, been, by special request, read, but has never been published till now. Of the others, the most have been already printed in different papers and magazines, but now for the first collected and issued together. Some of the minor pieces, being early efforts, hardly deserve preservation; nevertheless they are retained, and, with the rest, presented, rather than obtrusively offered, in deference to the desire of those who have urged their retention. If any of them shall prove a pleasant pastime to a casual or interested reader, or the source of comfort to any sorrowing heart, the object of their issue will have been attained, and the author amply rewarded. Excerpt from To One From Arcady: And Other Poems Sometimes I dreamed you came from Arcady, That you have lain upon the golden lawns In drowsy noontides with bronze-breasted fauns, Or mingled in their moonlight revelry, Danced 'mid the sapphire hills which girt the sea; That you have seen from out the reedy grass A pearl-limbed naiad loom (with hair like brass) Flecked by the sun and shadows' tracery! Aye, still the forest fragrance cleaves and clings TO your brown body and your perfumed hair; Still in your movement lurks wild woodland grace Of wind-stirred poplars (that make leafy lair For startled dryads when the satyr sings); Still you bring visions Of each God-loved place! Excerpt from Arista and Other Poems To the soul that's kindled by that spark Is the poet's Vision given. He has no need for help on Earth, Nor would he look to Heaven. O grant me, Lord, the Lamp of Love, O Watcher of the Skies, That I may light the way on Earth To him whose thoughts do rise. But the Lord did gently shake his head Not Love, but Sacrifice. Said the Lord Watcher of the Skies, Who does the Lamp of Wisdom tend. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Don Paez: And Other Poems Fashion is the queen of the world. Perhaps then, the success of a new work, whether it be in prose or, poetry, depends more upon fashion than upon merit; at least, with that portion of mankind who are governed more by extra neons influences than by their ownusound and sober judg ments. Those whose footsteps follow the beaten track, and whose thoughts reach only to imitation, are not always apt to relish, at first sight, whatever is of an original character, till fashion has adopted and consecrated it, and nothing can become fashionable until it is known and approved. In the conception of Solomon it was a folly and a shame to judge of a matter before it was heard and understood. Excuses for writing and publishing books are common. They are, perhaps, the offspring of affected modesty rather than the results of reluctant authorship. I shall offer no excuse. For, if writing a book needs an excuse, why write it at all? It is certainly easier to decline such a task than to aecom= plish it. I have written this work because a propensity.
