. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Excerpt from America and World Democracy Probably before the close of the twentieth cen tury all thoughtful people will recognize that the United States, of all nations, exercised the deep est political infiuence upon the human race during the nineteenth century. Down to the opening of that century the civilized world did not believe in a government of the people. With the excep tion of a few' Christians, most of whom had been driven to distant lands by their refusal to submit to tyranny, the Church, down to 1800, united with the State in upholdingthe divine right of kings. Coming events which now seem probable, if not inevitable, will show that democracy is slowly winning the victory over the human-race. That democracy has been slowly winning its way dur ing the past half-century is shown in the advance of parliamentary institutions in every country in Europe, in Canada, in Australia and New Zealand, in South Africa; in the fact that every British colony left free to create its own political institutions has adopted a written constitution modeled after the American. Prototype; in the struggle for the right of existence upon the part. Of the Russian Duma and the Chinese Parlia ment; in the maintenance of a Japanese Parlia ment, even though divine prerogatives are claimed for.the emperor; in the nascent and victorious struggle of women for the admission of the1r half of the race - by no means the weaker in in sight or in morals - to large influence in shapmg the institutions under which women as well as men must live; and, above all in the present war, which we may all hope is the death grapple of autocracy with democracy. Excerpt from Democracy and Character Yet, of all forms of government, democracy is, at first sight, the most absurd and impossible. To the mass of the people is entrusted the ultimate decision of all questions of public policy. These questions are, as a rule, complex in their nature. They require a knowledge of historical causes to explain their origin, and a knowledge of human nature to foresee their probable results. They involve an acquaintance with economic principles, if their material bearings are to be intelligible, and with ethics, if the decision is to be morally justified. Suppose, for example, such a simple question as that of a land tax is under consideration. Before we can form an Opinion of any value, we must know some thing of the history of the landlord system in Anglo Saxon communities. We must have some ideas as to the incidence of taxes, and understand that the burden of a tax is not always felt most heavily by the classes that pay it. We must recognise the existence and gauge the strength of the desire for landed property. We must consider delicate questions of morals, such as are involved in the social obligations of property owners or the rights of vested interests. All this implies knowledge and thought; and com petent observers tell us that on such questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Democracy: A Study of Government Destruction, and this very confession of solicitude involved in such concessions affords some invigora tion for the forces of reaction. When the idolaters of democracy begin to falter or to retreat it is time for the philosophers to take courage. That the status of political conditions is what it is here rep resented to be can best be shown by comparing the work of Mr. Lecky with that of De Tocqueville, and both with the political circumstances in which they arose. Excerpt from Liberty, Union and Democracy At least, the lectures in which I touched on this aspect of America proved to be among those which were most helpful to my French hearers, who desired to understand what man ner of men we Americans are. And it has seemed to me that perhaps some of my countrymen, too, might be glad to consider, in this broadly general way, those national ideals which we have come to feel most indisputably our own, most surely and ineradicably native. Excerpt from Democracy Made Safe The desirability of reforming our social system so that justice will flow down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream is conceded by every right-thinking person today. In the minds of the vast majority of people our present method of doing business is far from satisfactory as a basis of human society. As a result, the world teems with every description of reform organization imaginable. The mere existence of such societies and bands of well-disposed persons is evidence of the fact that something is wrong. How to go about the problem of readjusting society to conform with advanced ideals of humanity and social well-being is the thing which puzzles most people. "What shall we do to be saved?" is the well-nigh universal question. It is the purpose of the following pages to answer that question in a rational and humane spirit. Much is heard in these days of "making the world safe for Democracy." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dynamic Democracy Now that is just the very thing I fear too many of us have been doing ever since the war began. We have been damning men and nations and have not been doing much thinking. I should say there has not been half enough real thinking done. We have overlooked the fundamentals and lost sight of the very things we needed most to know, the things that would have been of the greatest comfort when the days were the darkest, the things that would have been the greatest stimulus to our courage and that would have lead to intelligent action. Carlyle said, A thinking man is the worst enemy the prince of darkness can have, and just now we need thinking men, if ever.
