Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a possible substitute for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in low-cost and large-scale electrochemical energy storage systems owing to the lack of lithium resources. The properties of SIBs are correlated to the electrode materials, while the performance of electrode materials is significantly affected by the morphologies. In recent years, several kinds of anode materials involving carbon-based anodes, titanium-based anodes, conversion anodes, alloy-based anodes, and organic anodes have been systematically researched to develop high-performance SIBs. Nanostructures have huge specific surface areas and short ion diffusion pathways. However, the excessive solid electrolyte interface film and worse thermodynamic stability hinder the application of nanomaterials in SIBs. Thus, the strategies for constructing three-dimensional (3D) architectures have been developed to compensate for the flaws of nanomaterials. This review summarizes recent achievements in 3D architectures, including hollow structures, core-shell structures, yolk-shell structures, porous structures, and self-assembled nano/micro-structures, and discusses the relationship between the 3D architectures and sodium storage properties. Notably, the intention of constructing 3D architectures is to improve materials performance by integrating the benefits of various structures and components. The development of 3D architecture construction strategies will be essential to future SIB applications.

Voids in Materials treats voids of different shapes and forms in various materials, and examines their effects on material properties. The book covers the origins of voids in materials, how they are sometimes introduced in the form of hollow spheres, and the resultant properties of materials containing voids. There are many books that focus on foams (which intentionally incorporate voids into materials) and that cover voids incidental to or unwanted in the fabrication of non-porous materials. In fact, all materials have voids. This book starts from the premise that voids are pervasive in all material on some level. It goes beyond foams to provide a comprehensive overview of voids, a central reference for scientists and engineers to use for the effect of voids in materials. Includes 3D renderings of void geometries Explains how and why voids are introduced into materials across the length scales; from nanometer-scale voids up to macro-scale voids Provides a continuous picture of how material properties change as the volume fraction of voids increases, and the implications for product design

Since the development of the first modules, hollow fibers have totally revolutionized the world of membranes—thanks to the new technological breakthroughs and innovative materials discovered. The importance of a book putting hollow fibers in the spotlight owes to this type of configuration being more and more appreciated, particularly in large-scale applications. Moreover, the advent of nanofibers has injected new vitality in biomedical research, air and water separation and filtration processes, and emerging areas of nanotechnology. This book singles out and highlights the unique properties that hollow fibers and nanofibers display in the fields where they already represent the dominant configuration and where their full exploitation is still hindered by economic and technological constraints.
