Excerpt from Debaters' Manual Debating is the oral presentation of arguments under such conditions that each speaker may reply directly to the arguments of the opposing speaker. The debate is opened by the first speaker for the affirmative. He is then followed by the first speaker for the negative, each side speaking alternately until each man has presented his main speech. After all the main speeches have been delivered the negative opens the rebuttal. The speakers in rebuttal alternate negative and affirmative. This order gives the closing speech to the affirmative. Excerpt from A Manual of Debate and Oral Discussion: For Schools, Societies and Clubs The purpose of this book is to present in the briefest and simplest manner possible the necessary elementary principles which are observed wherever orderly public discussion takes place, - whether in a formally organized debate on. an unamendable proposition, or in the more informal discussion of separate propositions related to a general topic It is clear that in both situations we are dealing with oral argumentation. The principles to be followed, either in debate or discussion, as these terms are used here, are necessarily very similar. Throughout this text, however, both forms are kept in mind, and here and there special adaptations to one or the other are definitely discussed. Probably the ideal method of studying in this field, of preparing one's self to do effective oral argument, is to pursue a regular course of classroom work. This book is prepared principally with this situation in mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual of Argumentation: For High Schools and Academies The increasing interest taken in debate by the larger high schools and academies has prompted the preparation of this Manual of Argumentation. There has seemed to be need of a book that would present in a clear and simple way the elements of debate to that large class of students who are not advanced enough to master the rather difficult college text-books on the subject, but who are deeply interested in debating because it appeals to those instincts which are the basis of oratory and as old as the race. The authors, desiring to know if other teachers felt a similar need, sent letters to the, masters of many of the larger high schools and academies throughout the country, asking their opinion as to the usefulness of such a book. To these letters over eighty per cent of the replies were favorable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
