The COVID-19 pandemic with the protocols of social distance, isolation, and quarantine changed the practices associated with traditional funerals and rituals. The purpose of this phenomenology study was to understand the lived experience of individuals that process bereavement in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is a new phenomenon; the research questions will guide this study to understand the lived experience of individuals that process bereavement in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research questions were (1) What are the experiences of those that processed death without rituals or traditions during COVID-19, and (2) How has COVID-19 transformed and intensified the grieving process? The participants were given a complicated grief survey to fill out before the interview. The participants must have lost a loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic. The death did not have to be COVID-related. There were eleven participants in this study, three men and eight females. The 18 years or older participated in eleven questions semi-structured interviews. The study concluded that COVID-19 had an impact on the bereavement and grieving process during the pandemic. With the strict protocols and restrictions mandated by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), federal, state, and local authorities, the opportunity to engage in traditional funerals or burial rituals was absent. All the participants commented that the nonexistent in-person activities, cancellation of events, limited visitation, and gatherings surrounding the death and dying left their bereavement process incomplete. This study illuminated the essential nature of human presence and involvement in traditional rituals and death processes as a healthy and prosperous bereavement process.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many individuals and families to confront the inevitability of death while at the same time it caused a disruption to the traditions that surround the dying process. These extreme changes are assumed to have negative effects on bereaved people’s mental health. It is anticipated that bereaved people will have long-lasting implications such as Prolonged Grief Disorder. The purpose of this study is to explore people’s experiences of losing a loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic. By examining people’s experiences, social workers can gain a better understanding of prolonged grief and how to best treat bereaved individuals. Individuals over the age of 18 who experienced the death of a loved one between November 2020 and March 2021 were asked to take an original set of quantitative and qualitative interview questions regarding demographics, the death of their loved one, and restrictions surrounding after death services followed by the PG-13-R. Data was analyzed using SPSS to identify frequency distribution. A bivariate analysis was conducted to identify statistically significant correlations between variables. Twenty-one individuals completed the entire survey. 30% of participants meet criteria for the diagnosis of complicated grief, which is much higher than the prevalence among the general population (Between 2 and 7%). Grief scores of 30 and above were related to living with the loved one (p = 0.038) and presented a trend related to sexual orientation (p = 0.081). The pandemic itself will cause a high demand for social workers due to an increase of urgent social needs. With an increased death rate, it is more common for individuals to have experienced a loss of a loved one. Social workers will find themselves more frequently working and helping clients with grief. When grief is left unattended other emotional and health problems may appear. Social workers also need to be aware of the warning signs of complicated grief so they can provide early intervention.
