"From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe to Dorothy Sayers and Ellery Queen, the best mystery writers have always favored the short story. And the tradition is alive and well in Deadly Allies II, the second collaboration between the two most influential mystery writers' organizations in America - Private Eye Writers of America and Sisters in Crime." "This exciting new anthology of previously unpublished works once again features thematically paired stories - one by a member of PWA, the other by a SinC - that are sure to generate provocative contrasts for the readers. S. J. Rozan and Loren D. Estleman provide classic tales of private eyes whose clients think their money can buy anything; Max Allan Collins and Faye Kellerman remind us of how terrifying utter helplessness can be; Marilyn Wallace and Benjamin M. Schutz explore the passionate revenge of discarded lovers." "These and eight other pairings - of such luminaries as Jeremiah Healy and P. M. Carlson, Sarah Shankman and John Lutz, Joan Hess and Michael Collins - will keep mystery buffs up reading long in the night."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Australia has always been reliant on 'great and powerful friends' for its sense of national security and for direction on its foreign policy—first on the British Empire and now on the United States. Australia has actively pursued a policy of strategic dependence, believing that making a grand bargain with a powerful ally was the best policy to ensure its security and prosperity. Dangerous Allies examines Australia's history of strategic dependence and questions the continuation of this position. It argues that international circumstances, in the world and in the Western Pacific especially, now make such a policy highly questionable. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States has also changed dramatically, making it less relevant to Australia and a less appropriate ally on which Australia should rely. Malcolm Fraser argues that Australia should adopt a much greater degree of independence in foreign policy, and that we should no longer merely follow other nations into wars of no direct interest to Australia or Australia's security. He argues for an end to strategic dependence and for the timely establishment of a truly independent Australia.

X-Men meets Spy Kids in the fourth installment of The Forgotten Five middle-grade fantasy/adventure series by the New York Times bestselling author of The Unwanteds. Following an explosive showdown with President Fuerte and his supernatural henchmen, the forgotten five and their allies are feeling lost. Their trusted friend and mentor The Librarian has left the group and declared her loyalty to the corrupt president. Has the Librarian really abandoned them in their quest to take down Fuerte’s regime, or has she been kidnapped? Then, without warning, Troy Cordoba—Tenner’s dad, who has been working for Fuerte for years—shows up at the five’s safe house wanting to join their cause but accidentally leading the presidential guards right to their doorstep. Troy insists that he has changed for the better, but Tenner isn’t sure he can be trusted. Meanwhile, Magdalia Palacio’s election campaign is gaining steam. If she’s against the president, does that make her the five’s ally? The kids will have to decide who to put their faith in—and fast—before the president uses his supernatural army to crush his opponent and cement his criminal rule over Estero once and for all.
