Daughter of Lenny, Queen of Herself: The Story of Zoe's Ascent to Royalty: Unleash Your Inner Kravitz Discard the silver spoon. Zoe Kravitz did not have a tattoo of Hollywood royalty on her forehead from birth. Although Daughter of Lenny, Queen of Herself is narrated by the daughter of a music legend, it is not a tale of living in the shadow of another person. This is a rallying call for everybody who has ever felt under pressure to prove themselves and a step-by-step guide for creating your own empire. This is not a pompous history book. This book explores: The beginning of a creative soul: We delve into Zoe's early creative awakening, which planted the seeds for her future success in both acting and music. Getting off the expectations' soundtrack: See how she battles the title of "Lenny's daughter" and her unflinching resolve to carve out her own destiny. Discover her unwavering quest for parts, from small-screen beginnings to landing famous characters in blockbusters like "X-Men" and "Fantastic Beasts"-from auditions to A-lister. Using clothing as a tool for self-expression Dissect how Zoe's audacious, self-aware style transformed red carpet glamour. This has more to do with embracing your uniqueness and power than it does with clothes. Rebellious-hearted music: Explore her journey into the music industry, where she discovered her voice and established her distinct R&B style. * **Loving, bereavement, and the mosaic of self-discovery: ** Discover Zoe's personal history, the lessons she's learned from relationships and love, and the events that shaped the confident woman she is today. After World War II, Japanese Americans in Hawai‘i sought to carve a positive niche of public citizenship in the community. In 1953 members of the Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce and their wives created a beauty contest, the Cherry Blossom Festival (CBF) Queen Pageant, which quickly became an annual spectacle for the growing urban population of Honolulu. Crowning the Nice Girl analyzes the pageant through its decades of development to the present within multiple frameworks of gender, class, and race/ethnicity. Drawing on extensive archival research; interviews with CBF queens, contestants, and organizers; and participant observation in the Fiftieth Annual Festival as a volunteer, Christine Yano paints a complex portrait of not only a beauty pageant, but also a community. The study begins with the subject of beauty pageants in general and Asian American beauty pageants in particular, interrogating the issues they raise, embedding them within their histories, and examining them as part of a global culture that has taken its model from the Miss America contest.Yano follows the pageant throughout the decades into the 1990s, adding corresponding "herstories"—extensive narratives drawn from interviews with CBF queens. She concludes by framing issues of race, ethnicity, spectacle, and community within the intertwined themes of niceness and banality.

UPraise for Fake Mustache/u DIV“There’s no twist too goofy or absurd as Angleberger pulls out all the stops for this unabashedly silly story.”/divDIV—Publishers Weekly "Angleberger’s foot-on-the-floor zaniness helps pull it off, fueled by a steady stream of gags and utter ridiculousness that make Saturday-morning cartoons seem reasonable in comparison. Pure, unfiltered hilarity." —Booklist "The 2012 campaign season just got a little hairier. Kids will delight in the various ways in which Casper exploits his power over grownups." —The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "Appropriately goofy." —The Horn Book "Angleberger severs all ties with sanity in his latest farce for preteens with hilarious results. There's plenty of action and goofiness. Fans of Angleberger's previous efforts won't be disappointed. The oldest daughter of revered composer Leonard Bernstein offers a rare look at her father on the centenary of his birth—illuminating a man, a city, and an era that defined modern culture—in a deeply intimate and broadly evocative memoir reminiscent of Alexandra Styron’s Reading My Father and Richard Ford’s Between Them. The composer of On the Town and West Side Story, chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic, television star, humanitarian, friend of the powerful and influential, and inveterate partygoer Leonard Bernstein was a massive celebrity during one of the headiest periods of American cultural life, and perhaps the most talented musician in American history. To his eldest daughter, Jamie, he was all that and more; he was the man in the scratchy brown bathrobe that smelled of cigarettes, who sat late at night at the piano when he couldn’t sleep (he could never sleep). An incredible jokester, an incessant teacher, he taught her to love the world in all its beauty and complexity. In public and private, Lenny was larger than life. In Famous Father Girl, Bernstein mines the emotional depths of her childhood and invites us into her family’s private world. A fantastic set of characters populate the Bernsteins’ lives, including: the Kennedys, Mike Nichols, John Lennon, Richard Avedon, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Robbins, and Betty (Lauren) Bacall. An intoxicating tale, Famous Father Girl is an intimate meditation on a deeply complex and sometimes troubled man and the beautiful music that was the soundtrack to his life. Deeply moving and often hilarious, Bernstein’s beautifully written memoir is great American story about one of the greatest Americans of the modern age.
