Scientific Study from the year 2023 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (NRCRI - Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria), course: Earth Science and Solid Minerals Warehousing, language: English, abstract: In recent years, decision support systems otherwise called Data Warehouse have become an integral part of organization's decision-making strategy. Organizations these days are competing in the global market. In order for any organization to gain competitive advantage over the others and also to help make better decisions, Data warehousing cum Data Mining are now playing a significant role in strategic decision making, nationally and globally. It helps in better decisions, streamline work-flows, and provide better customer services. This paper gives the report about developing data warehouse for solid minerals in Nigeria, using a model of management system as a case study to capture solid minerals in the South South Region of Nigeria. It describes the process of data warehouse design and development using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. It also outlines the development of a data cube as well as application of Online Analytical processing (OLAP) tools and Data mining tools in data analysis. It was concluded that the effective use of Data-Warehousing and Data mining in solid minerals resource management system will promote the rapid growth of the Nigerian diverse mineral resources and offer information on past, present and future prospects of mineral deposits, for exploration and utilization for economic development.

This book furnishes a detailed description of the mineral deposits of metallic, non-metallic, solid energy, gemstones and industrial minerals in Nigeria, West Africa with emphasis on their location, geological setting, mode of occurrence, physical and chemical characteristics, ore reserve estimates and metallogeny. It also provides a geoscientific analysis of the solid mineral sector, mineral production statistics, mining, and potential targets for mineral exploration. There are twenty chapters in the book, divided into five parts: Part 1 (geological setting), Part 2 (metallic minerals), Part 3 (energy minerals), Part 4 (industrial minerals & gemstones), and Part 5 (metallogeny, mining & exploration). This book is an invaluable source of information, not only for geology and mining students, but also for practicing geoscientists, exploration and mining professionals and administrators in government and private companies who are interested or involved in economic geology, mineral exploration, and mineral resource development in Nigeria.

Scientific Study from the year 2023 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (NRCRI - Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria), course: Computer Science Database, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the current state, prospects and challenges in digitizing archival collections of Gemstones and its resources in Nigeria. The research adopted a qualitative research method. The case study research strategy was considered appropriate for the study. Data was gathered through observation and interviews. Interviews were conducted with fifty-two respondents from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Federal Secretariat, Uyo and the Akwa Ibom State e-library, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The study revealed that the respondents claimed to have good knowledge of Gemstones occurrence and its economic importance in Nigeria. They have knowledge of digitization, are aware of the need for digitizing reports published about Gemstones in Nigeria, and that most of the collections are currently not being digitized. Respondents admitted that digitization would be highly beneficial to Government, the institutions that regulate mineral resources, corporate organizations and artisan miners but issues such as lack of funding, lack of digitization policy and lack of trained personnel are the major challenges facing the digitization of Gemstones in the country. The research deals with the contextual and local nature of digitization and brings to the fore the importance of digitizing the collections of Genmstones and its resources in Nigeria. The findings and recommendations of this study is very useful to the Federal and States Governments, policy makers and all stakeholders in the solid minerals sub-sector, especially now that Government propose to diversify the Nigerian economy.

Organised mining and extraction of mineral resources began in 1903 in the Northern Protectorates and in 1904 in the Southern Protectorates of modern Nigeria with the establishment of Mineral Survey of the Northern Protectorates and the Mineral Survey of Southern Protectorates respectively, by the British colonial government. Over a century later, extraction of mineral resources in the country is still highly underdeveloped. There are great conflicts that surround oil extraction in the Niger Delta region, and Nigeria imports solid minerals which she is capable of producing domestically. The extraction of solid minerals and oil resources also calls into question issues of environmental neglect in the country. This paper provides for a descriptive analysis of Nigeria's mineral and oil resources extraction and management policy since the colonial period. It is observed that public policies in the sector have been interventionist, marginal, disjointed and elitist, and, have not properly included issues of sustainability for peace and development. Key recommendations of the paper are that public policy in the mineral and oil sector should seek to include more stringent regulations in relation to the environment, ensure equity in rent or royalty distribution especially to the host communities and develop the extraction of solid minerals with which the country is abundantly blessed.
