An exploration of secret languages, moving among hermetic artificial tongues as diverse as criminal jargons and divine speech. Dark Tongues constitutes a sustained exploration of a perplexing fact that has never received the attention it deserves. Wherever human beings share a language, they also strive to make from it something new: a cryptic idiom, built from the grammar that they know, which will allow them to communicate in secrecy. Such hidden languages come in many shapes. They may be playful or serious, children's games or adults' work. They may be as impenetrable as foreign tongues, or slightly different from the idioms from which they spring, or barely perceptible, their existence being the subject of uncertain, even unlikely, suppositions. The first recorded jargons date to the time of the Renaissance, when writers across Europe noted that obscure languages had suddenly come into use. A varied cast of characters--lawyers, grammarians, and theologians--denounced these new forms of speech, arguing that they were tools of crime, plotted in tongues that honest people could not understand. Before the emergence of these modern jargons, however, the artificial twisting of languages served a different purpose. In epochs and regions as diverse as archaic Greece and Rome and medieval Provence and Scandinavia, singers and scribes also invented opaque varieties of speech. They did so not to defraud, but to reveal and record a divine thing: the language of the gods, which poets and priests alone were said to master. Dark Tongues moves among these various artificial and hermetic tongues. From criminal jargons to sacred idioms, from Saussure's work on anagrams to Jakobson's theory of subliminal patterns in poetry, from the arcane arts of the Druids and Biblical copyists to the secret procedure that Tristan Tzara, founder of Dada, believed he had uncovered in Villon's songs and ballads, Dark Tongues explores the common crafts of rogues and riddlers, which play sound and sense against each other.

There is no plague in Enfaire... Dead things have been found in the fields of Enfaire, a God-fearing town north of Reams. Not just dead things but twisted forms... unholy shapes. And there are rumours, too-of a blasphemous union and of fell creatures that haunt the night. Yet, even as plague and witch pyres blacken the sky, the town remains untouched by the malady that has already claimed thousands and will claim thousands more. It is here, in Enfaire, that an old Franciscan friar and his ward take shelter from a storm. It is here, in a little town on the edge of civilization, that they will have their faith truly tested. His Black Tongue is a tale of medieval horror, plunging the reader into the plague-torn land of 14th century France, when pestilence and death walked hand-in-hand, and life was little more than a sputtering candle, waiting to be put out. But there are worse things than death, than sickness and decay... and it comes upon leathery black wings. Includes The Bone Fields novella and the short stories The Knights of the Non-Euclidean Table and Necropolis.

Borgl is the language of the Shadow." -Dark Lord KrzathorBorgl ("Black Tongue") is the liturgical and magickal language used by members of our Order-the Order of the Black Sun (Borzm-Gzl)-to invoke Vril into themselves and command the external world. With this language, our Order shall rename all things in this world, thus imposing our thought-forms upon it and thereby conquering it. Borgl shall also be our secret tongue, used to identify other members of our kind and separate ourselves from the White Sunnites and mundanes of this world. Those who choose to learn Borgl are a self-selecting elite, founders of a new cult, heralds of a new order and propagators of a new magickal regime. This manual is an introduction to Borgl for Acolytes, Apprentices and lay followers of our Order. The words and concepts contained herein should be studied and mastered by using them in conversation with other Black Sunnites, reciting the sayings and mantras described in this book (and others you create), and writing in the Hrzad script. Practice makes powerful!Note #1: Borgl is not a complete language, but a partial work in progress. It is being revealed over time by myself, Dark Lord Ravuk and other Black Sunnites, and is therefore subject to revision and expansion at any time. This Handbook is a first edition to get disciples started speaking, writing and thinking in the language of the Black Sun Brotherhood. New editions will be forthcoming as more of the language is revealed.Note #2: To begin your initiation into the Order, submit the exercises contained in the last chapter of this book as described.Rk m chod!BORGSH KRZATHORDark Lord and scribe of the Order of the Black Sun

"Gemma Files has one of the great dark imaginations in fiction―visionary, transgressive, and totally original." --Jeff VanderMeer In Gemma Files's "boundary-busting horror-fantasy debut," former Confederate chaplain Asher Rook has cheated death and now possesses a dark magic (Publishers Weekly). He uses his power to terrorize the Wild West, leading a gang of outlaws, thieves, and killers, with his cruel lieutenant and lover, Chess Pargeter, by his side. Pinkerton agent Ed Morrow is going undercover to infiltrate the gang, armed with a shotgun and a device that measures sorcerous energy. His job is to gain knowledge of Rook's power and unlock its secrets. But there is someone else who has Rook in her sights: the Lady of Traps and Snares, a bloodthirsty Mayan goddess who will stop at nothing to satisfy her own desires. Caught between the good, the bad, and the unholy, Morrow will have to ride out a storm of magical mayhem to survive, in this debut novel, the first book of Files's "weird Western Hexslinger trilogy . . . [which] is chock full of hellish horrors" (Mike Allen, author of Unseaming). "Ridiculously vivid . . . A magic-riddled, horror-strewn West with hexes running around wrecking reality and a spectrum of queer characters." --Tor.com "Definitely promising--tantalizing, even, because it sets up such a fertile scenario and hammers home the themes of love, sacrifice, and apotheosis." --Strange Horizons "Truly one-of-a-kind: violent, carnal and creepy." --Fangoria

"Buehlman...slips effortlessly into a different kind of literary sensibility, one that doesn't scrimp on earthy humor and lyrical writing in the face of unspeakable horrors."* The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found an orphan of the Black Death in a Norman village. An almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that the plague is only part of a larger cataclysm--that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on Heaven. But is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across an apocalyptic landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfill her mission. There her true nature will be revealed. And there Thomas will confront an evil wrestling for the throne of Heaven, and which has poisoned his own soul. *Kirkus Reviews
