"Aerial block surveys (blocks established in 1984) were conducted on 5, 10, and 11 August 1997 to document the number and distribution of Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli) in the Richardson Mountains, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Yukon Territory (YT). Due to inclement weather, three blocks (Millen, Bear, and White) were not surveyed. We counted and classified 1,344 sheep including 802 nursery sheep, 250 lambs, 286 rams (76 half curl, 74 three-quarter curl and 136 full curl) and 1 unclassified sheep. Total populations size was estimated at 1,730 sheep; this was based on the assumption that the number of sheep in the Millen, Bear, and White blocks had not changed from 1991. The annual rate of increase for the non-lamb portion of the population was 4% per year during 1991 and 1997; the number of full curl rams increased between 1991 and 1997 but the full extent of the increase could not be determined due to poor weather conditions. There were 31.2 lambs per 100 nursery sheep; this suggested a stable or increasing population. Overall, 92% of the sheep were observed in the NWT; however, the three blocks that could not be surveyed were in the YT"--Page ii.

"Aerial block surveys were conducted during 20 to 25 June 2001 to document the number and distribution of Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli) in the Richardson Mountains, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Yukon Territory (YT). We counted and classified 1,057 sheep including 734 nursery sheep, 92 lambs, 231 rams (43 half curl, 55 three-quarter curl and 133 full curl). The annual rate for the non-lamb portion of the population was 8% during 1997 to 2001; this was the first decline documented for this sheep population since surveys began in 1984. The number of full curl rams decreased by 38% (from 373 in 1991 to 231 in 2001). There were 12.5 lambs per 100 nursery sheep; this ratio was significantly lower than those observed during surveys conducted in 1984 to 1997. Little recruitment can be expected in 2002 indicating that further declines in the population can be expected. The majority of lambs, nursery sheep, and rams were found in the NWT; the majority of rams were found in the Rat block. Overall 66% of the sheep observed were found in the NWT"--Page ii.

"Aerial block surveys (blocks established in 1984) were conducted on 1 and 3 August 1991 to document the number and distribution of Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli) in the Richardson Mountains, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Yukon Territory (YT), Canada. We counted and classified 1,374 sheep including 675 nursery sheep, 289 lambs, 373 rams (99 half curl, 92 three-quarter curl and 182 full curl) and 37 unclassified sheep. The annual rate of increase for the non-lamb portion of the population was 14% per year during 1986 to 1991; the number of full curl rams nearly tripled (increasing from 67 to 182) during this period. There were 43 lambs per 100 nursery sheep; this was exceptional given the survey was done in early August. The majority of lambs and nursery sheep were found in the Goodenough, Lick, Sheep, Rat, and Cache blocks; the majority of rams were found in the Rat block. Overall 70% of the sheep were observed in the NWT"--Page iii.

"Aerial block surveys (blocks established in 1984) were conducted during 16 to 31 August 2003 to document the number and distribution of Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli) in the Richardson Mountains, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Yukon Territory (YT), Canada. We counted and classified 757 sheep including 429 nursery sheep, 121 lambs, 177 rams (35 half curl, 41 three-quarter curl and 109 full curl) and 29 unclassified sheep. The annual rate of decline for the non-lamb portion of the population was 14% during 2001 to 2003; this population decline began during 1997 to 2001. There were 28.2 lambs per 100 nursery sheep indicating that productivity or lamb survival increased between 2001 and 2003. The numbers of rams decreased from 373 in 2001 to 177 in 2003 or by about 52%. Given the low number of rams observed, declines in the number of full curl rams can be expected over the next few years. Overall 72% of the sheep were observed in the NWT"--Page iii.

An aerial survey of the northern Richardson Mountains' Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) population was conducted between 19 and 22 June, 2017. The survey was conducted by helicopter on high mountain ridges keying in on post lambing habitat. The survey area blocks were established in 1984 and spans the border between the Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory. A total of 647 sheep were observed, of which 506 were adult sheep and 141 were lambs. Of the adult sheep, 323 were nursery sheep and 183 were rams. This is an increase in the size of the population compared to the last survey in 2014 (496 total sheep). The average lamb to nursery sheep and ram to nursery sheep ratios for this population were both healthy at 44:100 and 57:100, respectively. It is worth noting however that these ratios varied among survey blocks.

This report documents the age distribution & incidence of lumpy jaw infection in Dall's sheep harvested by non-resident hunters in 1986 in the Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories. The information presented is based on analyses of sheep lower jaws submitted by licensed outfitters operating in the Mountains. Investigators visually rated jaws for the severity of infection and removed incisors for age determination. The ages of some ram horns that were exported were estimated by counting the horn annuli, and these age determinations were compared to those obtained from tooth analyses.
