Excerpt from Cynthia's Revels: Or, the Fountain of Self-Love It is hoped that the method of handling the text will find approval. This method, which, so far as I know, has never before been accorded to a folio text, is fully ex plained in the section dealing with the variations in the impressions of the folio. In recording variant readings of later editions, only such have been chosen as seemed clearly significant, a proceeding which will, perhaps, render the foot-notes to the text of genuine interest to the average reader. Certain difficulties have appeared which all my efforts have not enabled me to solve; these have been frankly stated in order that the attention of future students of the play may be focused upon them. Fractured Rebellion is the first full-length account of the evolution of China’s Red Guard Movement in Beijing, the nation’s capital, from its beginnings in 1966 to its forcible suppression in 1968. Andrew Walder combines historical narrative with sociological analysis as he explores the radical student movement’s crippling factionalism, devastating social impact, and ultimate failure. Most accounts of the movement have portrayed a struggle among Red Guards as a social conflict that pitted privileged “conservative” students against socially marginalized “radicals” who sought to change an oppressive social and political system. Walder employs newly available documentary evidence and the recent memoirs of former Red Guard leaders and members to demonstrate that on both sides of the bitter conflict were students from comparable socioeconomic backgrounds, who shared similar—largely defensive—motivations. The intensity of the conflict and the depth of the divisions were an expression of authoritarian political structures that continued to exert an irresistible pull on student motives and actions, even in the midst of their rebellion. Walder’s nuanced account challenges the main themes of an entire generation of scholarship about the social conflicts of China’s Cultural Revolution, shedding light on the most tragic and poorly understood period of recent Chinese history.

The first book to look at rock rebellion through the lens of gender, The Sex Revolts captures the paradox at rock's dark heart--the music is often most thrilling when it is most misogynistic and macho. And, looking at music made by female artists, the authors ask: must it always be this way?

Excerpt from The Rebellion of the Beasts: Or, the Ass Is Dead! Long Live the Ass!! Depend upon it, my lord, humanity is as bad as pa triotism. I cannot hear this fury for teaching and ia structing, and improving morally the condition of our inferiors. He was no friend to legitimacy, that taught the learned pig; and nothing is so cruel, or so wicked, as to make the lower orders wiser than their betters. A poor man, and a poodle-dog should never be taught to read; they are much happier in their present con dition - and a cow and a negro are infinitely more to be envied, than the well-taught and democratic peasan try of England, who would give their ears to he as well fed, and as ignorant, as our West Indian slaves. Fate in plain sight. Major Crimes Detective Samantha Reilly prefers to work alone—she’s seen as a maverick, and she still struggles privately with the death of her partner. The only person who ever sees her softer side is Michael Turcotte, a teenager she’s known since she rescued him eleven years ago from the aftermath of his parents’ murder-suicide. In foster care since his parents’ death, Michael is a loner who tries to fly under the bullies’ radar, but a violent assault triggers a disturbing ability to view people’s dark futures. No one believes his first vision means anything, though—not even Sam Reilly. When reality mimics his prediction, however, Sam isn’t the only one to take notice. A strange girl named Tessa Masterson asks Michael about her future, and what he sees sends him back to Sam—is Tessa victim or perpetrator? Tessa’s tangled secrets draw Michael and Sam inexorably into a deadly conflict. Sam relies on Michael, but his only advantage is the visions he never asked for. As they track a cold and calculating killer, one misstep could turn the hunters into prey.
