As part of a planning study for proposed modifications to several interchanges along Interstate 5, a cultural resource survey was conducted to locate archaeological and historical sties which may be subject to disturbance or destruction during highway construction. The 9-mile-long project area extends from the Hayesville Interchange south to the Battle Creek Interchange in Salem, Marion County, Oregon, in the mid-Willamette Valley...As a result of the cultural resource survey and probing program, eight prehistoric sites and no historic sites are now known to be located within the project corridor. All eight sites are located within a 1 1/2-mile stretch along or near the Santiam Interchange. A testing and evaluation program should be carried out to determine the significance of these sites for the National Register and to design mitigative measures for those sites deemed to be significant.
