This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...is made with the original crude oil and not the heavier paraffine oil. The formulas are: The Emulsifier. Carbolic acid, liquid crude, 100 per cent.... 2 quarts. Menhaden or whale oil 2% quarts. Caustic potash, granulated 1 pound. Heat to 300 Fahr., remove from the fire and immediately add Kerosene 3% quarts. Water 5% quarts. The method of preparing is very like that of the Delaware formula, and the same precautions as to material and mixing must be observed. The Complete Soluble Oil. Emulsifier 8 parts. Crude petroleum 18 parts. Resin oil 4 parts. Water 1 part. This combination is made at ordinary temperatures in a barrel, the materials being added in the order given and thoroughly mixed. The cost of this combination is from 18 to 20 cents per gallon exclusive of labor, and it may be diluted for use with fifteen parts of water. To those who may wish to make either of these combinations I would suggest that they secure, as samples, small quantities of the materials they expect to use and make up a small trial batch to see whether the proper result is obtained. If successful in this, it will be possible to go ahead with confidence that a satisfactory combination will result with the larger lot. A preparation very similar to this is now prepared, commercially, by the makers of Scalccide, and also, I believe, by a Connecticut firm. SOAP WASHES. All soaps have some insecticide value depending on their penetrating power, the toughness of the film they form and the amount of caustic in them. Generally speaking, soaps kill by getting into the spiracles of the insect and clogging them up. A slimy suds, therefore, that forms a tough film when the water has evaporated, and which does not readily redissolve in water, is much better than a fluid suds...
