An in-depth look at the South London light rail tram system, from the author of Britain’s Last Mechanical Signalling. Croydon Tramlink is a new history about the network linking Wimbledon with Croydon in South London. This is the first full history of this fascinating tramway, which is about to celebrate its twentieth anniversary of opening. The book looks at the political, economic, and social aspects of the network, as well as the mechanical history of the system. The tramway has been an important aspect in rejuvenating the Croydon area and improving transport links in an area lacking underground lines. Praise for Croydon Tramlink “In the very readable narrative we learn of the careful behind the scenes work undertaken to gain the support of the principal local authority and BR, and the lengthy process of gaining parliamentary approval and securing the necessary capital funding. We also hear of the obstructive tactics of the bus lobby which prevented construction of a more passenger-friendly interchange at New Addington, surely an indictment of public transport policy and planning at the time. The book is liberally illustrated with color images, many showing the original red and white and current blue, green and white liveries worn by the light rail vehicles.” —West Somerset Railway Association

The term 'edge city' describes the rapid growth of urban centres at the edge of established cities. Widely discussed in the US, very little has been written about European edge cities. This book gives a comparative analysis of examples in Greece, Spain, Paris, Finland and the UK, with a theoretical analysis of edge cities and post-suburban Europe.

From the horse-drawn trams of the nineteenth century to the larger electric models of the early twentieth, this reliable form of public transport revolutionised town travel by making it affordable enough for working people to use. From the 1930s, the rise of the trolleybus, which also picked up power from overhead cables but ran without expensive tracks, looked set to supersede the tram – but ultimately, by the 1950s, both fell victim to motor buses and private cars. However, since the 1980s the environmental benefits of light rail have encouraged a growing comeback for trams on our crowded and polluted city streets. Using beautiful contemporary photographs, this is the fascinating story of the rise, fall and revival of this everyday, yet sometimes controversial, mode of urban transport.

A history of London’s horse, steam, cable, and electric tramways, and the operation that ended an era. Includes photos. The final volume in the Regional Tramways series focuses on the history of tram operation in the London area. Starting the story with the pioneering horse tramways operated by George Francis Train in the 1860s, the book narrates how the various horse, steam, cable, and electric tramways evolved in the period leading up to the creation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933. The primary focus of the book is the period immediately after World War II when, following the retention of the tramways for longer than anticipated, the process of conversion—codenamed Operation Tramaway—saw almost 1,000 trams eliminated from the streets of London in less than two years. Also covered are the two second-generation tramways—the Docklands Light Railway and Croydon Tramlink—which now serve parts of the Greater London area. The book concludes with an overview of those London trams that survive into preservation.

Revision 1.1 London is the most important political, financial, cultural and artistic center of the United Kingdom, and one of the most important cities of the world. In London there are many institutions and corporate headquarters of global importance; many important buildings: palaces, museums, theaters, concert halls, airports, railway stations, numerous embassies and consulates. London is a huge engine of the world economy. City is the largest financial center of London, home to banks, securities companies, insurance companies, law and accounting. A second financial district is developing, Canary Wharf. More than half of the top 100 British companies have their headquarters in central London and more than 70% in the metropolitan area of London. 31% of the world monetary transactions take place in London. Here are selling and buying more dollars than in New York, and more euros than in all other European cities. Tourism is one of the most important industries of the United Kingdom; over 350,000 people worked in tourism in 2003 only in London. With a number of universities, colleges and schools, London has a population of about 378,000 students, making it an important center of research and development.
