Every day, nurses practicing at the bedside are faced with the challenge of making decisions with the intention to provide the highest quality patient care. However, the process of determining the appropriate nursing action is not always clear-cut. Many times, nurses practice according to the ways that they were taught during their nursing education programs, irrespective of whether they are recent graduates or seasoned nurses (Mick, 2011). Research by Brown (1993) verified that there are many routine clinical practices that are carried out without any thoughts as to why a particular action is being performed. A review of professional literature published between 1990 and 2012 in nursing, healthcare, philosophy, and organizational behavior was conducted. The analysis that is part of this inquiry was drawn from these studies. Key issues identified are the lack of a consistent definition within nursing for the term "critical thinking," the lack of an accurate critical thinking assessment tool, and an absence of successful educational interventions to improve critical thinking skills. While there is no clear consensus on definition, assessment methods, or educational interventions, there is clearly a consensus on the importance of a nurse possessing the ability to think critically. Once the definition has been established, there is a need for continued research to identify the most effective assessment and educational interventions to improve critical thinking skills in nurses.
