Fifty years after the Equal Pay Act of 1963, women still face gender discrimination. Even though the "glass ceiling" has finally been broken for many women, stories of discrimination are still plentiful. Only 6 percent of those filing employment discrimination lawsuits in federal court ever go to trial and of those that do go to trial, a mere one in three has any chance of winning. That is what makes Lisa Shipley's story amazing: Lisa took a stand, fought back-and won. Lisa Shipley was her organization's top performer, an industry star, and well respected by colleagues. She had always been treated fairly and equitably, and loved her work. All of that took a turn when her organization's new CEO proceeded to belittle Lisa in front of her peers, deliberately exclude her from meetings and events that were crucial to her job performance, and denied her compensation she had earned. Pushed to her limits, Lisa sued her employer for gender discrimination. A jury of her peers found the company and its CEO guilty on all 10 charges in the lawsuit. Lisa's story is an authentic account of what happened when David took on Goliath, complete with the unexpected twists and turns you would only expect to find in a legal thriller-except that this really happened.

Doctor/singer/teacher/author Meredith Kennedy chronicles her adventures on five continents, as she leads student groups through Africa and New Zealand, performs as a singer, and explores culture, environment, music, and the recipe for the elusive Broken Glass Cake. Broken Glass Cake: Adventures off the Beaten Path explores the moment and transcends the ordinary by rescuing live seafood, carrying on 3 a.m. conversations with a can of bug spray, delivering a cow by flashlight, searching for giant nocturnal crustaceans, dancing in a spirit possession ceremony, hoping for first contact with extraterrestrials, and making music videos on the island of Zanzibar. Dr. Kennedy's chronicles of life off the beaten path take her from Africa to the South Pacific, to Europe and Central America, all sprinkled with wry humor and delight in the unexpected, with the occasional foray into time warps and imaginary historical characters. Her adventures with her students as she directs college semester abroad programs in remote locations continue to reveal how life happens while you're making plans.Meredith Kennedy is a veterinarian, with a master's degree in vocal performance, and was an Academic Director for World Learning Inc. for ten years in Africa and New Zealand. She is an emergency vet by night, a singer by day and lives in Palo Alto, California, but spends much of her time traveling around the world. Now working on the sequel, Betrayed by the False Banana, Dr. Kennedy writes to avoid sleepwalking through life as a channel-surfing consumer confined by a rampant comfort zone. http: //SBPRA.com/MeredithKenned

On August 29, 2005, the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States devastated the city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Mississippi. Like many others in America and around the world, Chris McLaughlin watched the tragedy of Katrina unfold on a television screen from the comfort of her living room on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. In the devastation afterwards, almost 2,000 people and an estimated 250,000 animals had perished. Miraculously, many pets did manage to survive. But in the months that followed the hurricane, thousands of them were fending for themselves in the ruins of devastated neighborhoods. They roamed the streets in feral packs or struck out alone. Their plight triggered a grassroots rescue effort unlike any this country had ever seen, and while relief organizations such as the Red Cross were tending to the human survivors, and movie stars and celebrities were airlifting food and endorsing seven-figure checks, a much smaller and meagerly funded effort was underway to save the four-legged victims. With no prior experience in disaster response and no real grasp of the hell that awaited them, scores of animal lovers, including McLaughlin, made their way to the Gulf Coast to help in any way they could. Including photos from four-time Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist Carol Guzy, Mississippi Barking spans the course of two years as McLaughlin and others ventured into the wreckage of the Gulf Coast to rescue the animals left behind. McLaughlin tells the moving stories of the people she met along the way, both those who lost everything to the hurricane and those working beside her rescuing and transporting animals away from the neglected, derelict conditions in which they barely survived. Within this story of tragedy and cruelty, suffering and ignorance, Mississippi Barking also bears witness to selfless acts of bravery and compassion, and the beauty and heroics of those who risked everything to save the animals that could not save themselves.

John Crowder was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1960 and enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard for four years. He later re-enlisted for another six years. His experiences during this time helped him discover another world outside the hills of West Virginia. After one final personal tragedy in his life, he returned to his birthplace and began life anew. He is a graduate of West Virginia State University and a retired chemical plant electrician with two adult children and four grandchildren. This book was written to tell others how military life can help a young man gain the necessary self-confidence to overcome life's obstacles. The author describes many of the men he worked with on a daily basis and how humor can be found in all walks of life. The writer also gives insight into his personal life as he struggled to support his family. Today's Coast Guard is a far cry from those lean years in the 1960's. The other Guardians who read this memoir will recognize the great differences in technologies between then and now. Life was different when the author served his ten years active duty as a Coast Guardsman. Airconditioned vessels were few-and-far-between. Isolated duty tours on LORAN stations and lighthouses were common. Many of the enlisted personnel qualified for food stamps, but very few would apply.Medical care was sparse unless you were stationed near a military installation with those medical facilities or a Public Health Service Hospital.Work uniforms for enlisted up to and including E-6 were chambray shirts, bell-bottomed dungarees, and a blue ball cap or white hat. Dress uniforms were either dress blues of bell-bottomed trousers and a jumper with white piping or a white uniform of the same except no piping, and a white hat. The author describes a few situations and conditions that give a very small overview of the older Coast Guard. In 1960, the Coast Guard was under the U. S. Treasury Department. Later it was moved to the newly-formed Department of Transportation. Some called this department a wet NASA. The orange slash was added to floating units and aircraft about 1968. Now, the Guardians are under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security. But as we all know, if war is declared, the CG will go under the good ole'U. S. Navy and the Department of Defense. The author was proud to have served as a Guardian, and he is proud of you men and women who are now serving. Those he has had the pleasure of meeting and serving with in today's Coast Guard are generally more aware of the world situation and are certainly better trained than we were. Semper Paratus, always ready, is what we want to be as one of the armed forces of The United States of America. I always pray that God will bless you in your service to keep us safe and free.
