I'll tell you two things a business plan is, and one it isn't. A business plan can be a formal document you hand to some organization, ninvestor, or keep for internal company use. A business plan is also the strategy for how you will execute every part of your business. This doesn't have to be a written plan. You can plan your business strategy in your mind. What's important is that you have a viable and quality plan of action before you start your business, and not just plunge into a business blindly. Now, let me tell you what a business plan isn't. Don't think about it as a prerequisite to starting a business like a homework assignment that must be completed and handed in before you can start. It also isn't something you have someone else create for you because you aren't sure how to write it. And it certainly shouldn't be your excuse to procrastinate on the actual work you need to do to start your business. I like to define the business plan as a cohesive strategy for your business that you may plan in your mind or in a written document that covers each major component of your business, how those major components will work well with one another, and your plan for executing those strategies. If you are not sure how to create an effective business plan and you are a first-time entrepreneur, learning how to plan your business is a very good first step. Learning empowers you long-term. You will be able to use what you learn about planning a business in your current business and every new idea in the future. As an entrepreneur, you must develop the habit of always learning and improving your skills and learning the skill of business planning should be high on a first-time entrepreneur's priority list. It might also help to get coached on planning your business so you can learn faster by getting guidance from an experienced business person while you both work on your business plan together. But don't just pay someone to write a business plan for you just to feel good that you have it. You must understand why every detail of your plan is in place. In an effort to make this book more helpful, as one of the extras in this book, I can provide feedback on your business idea or business plan. Since I can't read everyone's full business plan, please wait until you get further in the book and learn how to create the simple 3-sentence business plan. Send that to me and I'll be happy to give you feedback and suggestions.

Annotation Markides (chairman, strategic and international management department, London Business School) contends that the essence of business strategy is to allow a company to create and exploit a unique strategic position in industry, and helps managers zero in on critical choices that lie at the heart of all innovative strategies. He approaches strategic thinking as a creative process, and poses key questions for readers to ask as he guides them through a framework for developing strategic thinking skills.

Good Strategy/Bad Strategy clarifies the muddled thinking underlying too many strategies and provides a clear way to create and implement a powerful action-oriented strategy for the real world. Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to—and approach for—overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy.” In Good Strategy/Bad Strategy, he debunks these elements of “bad strategy” and awakens an understanding of the power of a “good strategy.” He introduces nine sources of power—ranging from using leverage to effectively focusing on growth—that are eye-opening yet pragmatic tools that can easily be put to work on Monday morning, and uses fascinating examples from business, nonprofit, and military affairs to bring its original and pragmatic ideas to life. The detailed examples range from Apple to General Motors, from the two Iraq wars to Afghanistan, from a small local market to Wal-Mart, from Nvidia to Silicon Graphics, from the Getty Trust to the Los Angeles Unified School District, from Cisco Systems to Paccar, and from Global Crossing to the 2007–08 financial crisis. Reflecting an astonishing grasp and integration of economics, finance, technology, history, and the brilliance and foibles of the human character, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy stems from Rumelt’s decades of digging beyond the superficial to address hard questions with honesty and integrity.

Formulating a strategy is one of the most important but also one of the most difficult challenges faced by businesses: How may one translate a concern into a structured issue and the hypotheses for addressing that issue? How should one approach the designing and executing of the analyses through which these hypotheses can be tested, thus creating the insights from which new strategic options can be developed? And how can one identify the “best bets” from among the many different strategic options available, and determine how these may be translated into a coherent business strategy that the organization and its stakeholders can buy into? This book helps to answer these questions for the senior manager responsible for company strategy; the project manager who’s been asked to chart and defend a new strategic course of action; and the student wishing to “learn the ropes” of strategy-creation. This book offers no theoretical strategy “frameworks”. Nor does it propagate a specific strategy of any kind. It is, quite simply, a “cook book” describing a step-by-step, focused and fast approach for creating a new strategy at medium-sized and large businesses. It is a proven method used by top management consultants to help clients develop new strategies. The Craft of Strategy Formation provides a crisp account of the consecutive steps to take (and pitfalls to watch out for) when typically vague business concerns need to be translated into actionable strategy fast. Featuring the tried-and-tested analytical and organizational approach of top management consultants, this integral account of how strategy is crafted in practice offers a welcome break from traditional handbooks featuring largely isolated frameworks, tools and cases; highly theoretical academic treatises; and largely anecdotal “infotainment” books for the general reader.
