Cowboy Bebop is one of the most beloved anime series of all time, and if you ask its fans why, you can expect to hear about its music. Composer Yoko Kanno created an eclectic blend of jazz, rock, lullabies, folk and funk (to list just a few) for Cowboy Bebop's many moods and environments. Cowboy Bebop's blend of science fiction, westerns and gangster films promised to be "the work which becomes a new genre itself," and only Kanno's score could deliver. In this volume of 33 1/3 Japan, musicologist Rose Bridges helps listeners make sense of the music of Cowboy Bebop. The book places it within the context of Bebop's influences and Kanno's larger body of work. It analyzes how the music tells Spike, Faye, Jet and the rest of the crew's stories. Cowboy Bebop and its music are like nothing else, and they deserve a guide to match. 33 1/3 Global, a series related to but independent from 33 1/3, takes the format of the original series of short, music-basedbooks and brings the focus to music throughout the world. With initial volumes focusing on Japanese and Brazilian music, the series will also include volumes on the popular music of Australia/Oceania, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and more.

The Devastation Trilogy Box Set: Dirge, Solace, Release -- Dirge (Book 1) He doesn’t know how to let go… I was a husband, a father, a politician. Now, I’m just lost. Maybe they can help find me, I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t be found. Maybe the devastation that is my life should be allowed to crumble and decay. There is no comfort in a funeral dirge, no solace in empty words spoken to me. There is no release from this hell but death, and I can’t do that yet. I don’t know how to let go. But…maybe they can help me hold on. --- Solace (Book 2) He doesn’t know how to give in… I’m in way over my head. I’m waiting for someone to point a finger at me and call me an imposter. I don’t belong here. Yet I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be. I don’t know what the hell this is between us, but even while I hate it, I crave it, like a damn drug. I need it. I need them. And I’ll do whatever it takes to stay here, even if it means giving up who I am. --- Release (Book 3) She doesn’t know how to give up… Off-limits. Boss. Married. But now… The excuses are gone, and the gloves are off. Except there’s a jungle of pain to carve through first, and I don’t know if I’m strong enough. All I know is I’m willing to try, if they are. I suspect if we can make it through to the other side that we’ll be unstoppable. It’s the journey that’s a bitch, though. So buckle up, buttercup. It’s going to be a wild ride. The Devastation Trilogy is a no-holds-barred political romance set in the world of the Governor Trilogy series and can be read independently from that series. It contains a MMF pairing, including crossed swords, and features power exchange dynamics, older main characters, an age-gap romance, gay-for-you that surprises both of them, some FemDom action but mostly MaleDom, a secret workplace romance that could shatter all three of their political careers and end a governorship, old secrets, new secrets, survival after unspeakable tragedy, panty-dropping desktop shenanigans, two Dominants using their shared subby as a (willing) chew toy, second chances at happiness, and a satisfying HEA. George Forrester's character was first introduced in Lieutenant (Governor Trilogy 2) but you do not have to read that book to enjoy this trilogy.

Examines social and cultural phenomena through the lens of different television shows We all have opinions about the television shows we watch, but television criticism is about much more than simply evaluating the merits of a particular show and deeming it ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Rather, criticism uses the close examination of a television program to explore that program’s cultural significance, creative strategies, and its place in a broader social context. How to Watch Television brings together forty original essays from today’s leading scholars on television culture, writing about the programs they care (and think) the most about. Each essay focuses on a particular television show, demonstrating one way to read the program and, through it, our media culture. The essays model how to practice media criticism in accessible language, providing critical insights through analysis—suggesting a way of looking at TV that students and interested viewers might emulate. The contributors discuss a wide range of television programs past and present, covering many formats and genres, spanning fiction and non-fiction, broadcast and cable, providing a broad representation of the programs that are likely to be covered in a media studies course. While the book primarily focuses on American television, important programs with international origins and transnational circulation are also covered. Addressing television series from the medium’s earliest days to contemporary online transformations of television, How to Watch Television is designed to engender classroom discussion among television critics of all backgrounds.

Dramatic advances in genetics, cloning, robotics, and nanotechnology have given rise to both hopes and fears about how technology might transform humanity. As the possibility of a posthuman future becomes increasingly likely, debates about how to interpret or shape this future abound. In Japan, anime and manga artists have for decades been imagining the contours of posthumanity, creating dazzling and sometimes disturbing works of art that envision a variety of human/nonhuman hybrids: biological/mechanical, human/animal, and human/monster. Anime and manga offer a constellation of posthuman prototypes whose hybrid natures require a shift in our perception of what it means to be human. Limits of the Human—the third volume in the Mechademia series—maps the terrain of posthumanity using manga and anime as guides and signposts to understand how to think about humanity’s new potentialities and limits. Through a wide range of texts—the folklore-inspired monsters that populate Mizuki Shigeru’s manga; Japan’s Gothic Lolita subculture; Tezuka Osamu’s original cyborg hero, Atom, and his manga version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (along with Ôtomo Katsuhiro’s 2001 anime film adaptation); the robot anime, Gundam; and the notion of the uncanny in Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, among others—the essays in this volume reject simple human/nonhuman dichotomies and instead encourage a provocative rethinking of the definitions of humanity along entirely unexpected frontiers.
