Caño Negro is a relatively isolated community geographically, and the health care situation reflects this. The available modern health care establishments (defined as those services endorsed by formally educated practitioners and accepted by the general public as quality health care) do not offer complete services, each one lacking one or another of the qualities necessary for premium modern health care such as qualified personnel and well-supplied facilities, regularity, or convenience. Traditional health care, treatment with medicinal plants, has been used in Caño Negro in the past and many women and families still use these plants. This study examines the health care situation, the use of medicinal plants, women's roles in family and community health care, and the effect of medicinal plants on women's roles. The work measures the interest of Caño Negro women in a communal "vivero", nursery, and includes medicinal plant remedy recipes which will be compiled into a small book for use by the Caño Negro community.

At the biological crossroads of the Americas, Costa Rica hosts one of the widest varieties of plants in the world, with habitats ranging from tidal mangrove swamps, and lowland rainforests, to dry tropical evergreen and deciduous forests. Field Guide to Plants of Costa Rica is a must-have reference guide for beginner and expert naturalists alike. It provides a thorough survey of more than 850 plant species, each entry accompanied by color photos and a concise yet detailed narrative description. Plants are conveniently grouped by the different types of vegetation: palms, tall trees, shrubs, woody vines, herbaceous vines, herbs, grasses and ferns. Along with 1400 color photographs, the guide also includes an illustrated glossary of plant parts, five maps of Costa Rica, and laminated covers for durability in the field. With so much readily accessible information, this book is essential for exploring Costa Rica's common and conspicuous flora from the plants growing along the roadside to the best natural parks.
