This report provides technical guidelines for a new type of concrete armor unit called CORE-LOC(TM) (hereafter referred to as core-loc), which was developed and patented worldwide by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. Information is provided on core-loc geometry, stable weight estimation, armor layer thickness, and armor layer packing density. The use of core-loc as a repair unit for dolos armoring is discussed. Fabrication guidelines are provided, including a discussion of American standards for concrete, cement, and aggregates. Recommended standard core-loc sizes are discussed and tables are provided that suggest standardized core-loc sizes with their associated geometric relationships, hydraulic stability capacity, and structural requirements.

A new series of coastal rubble structure concrete armor units called CORE-LOC has been developed at the Coastal Engineering Research Center, U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. CORE-LOC units have been designed for random placement in a single layer on steep or shallow slopes. CORE-LOC shapes have been optimized to maximize hydraulic stability, unreinforced strength, and reserve stability, but minimize on slope volume and casting yard space. CORE-LOC is designed to interlock well with dolosse so that it can be used as a repair unit. While several different CORE-LOC shapes have been developed, this report discusses preliminary hydraulic stability tests of the middle aspect ratio. Finite element studies of CORE-LOC showed maximum flexural tensile stresses to be 47 percent, 74 percent, and 33 percent those of dolosse, accropode, and tribar, respectively. Torsional stresses were 54 percent, 74 percent, and 38 percent those of dolosse, accropode, and tribar, respectively. Initial two-dimensional hydraulic stability tests of the CORE-LOC shape indicate that the unit is one of the most stable randomly placed armor units ever tested, withstanding breaking wave heights 5 to 7 times the maximum dimension of the unit on slopes of 3V:4H and 1V:1.5H.

This issue discusses concrete armor units that are increasingly being used to protect coastal structures for several reasons. More structures are being built in harsh wave environments where stone armor is simply not effective. This movement toward previously underdeveloped high wave energy areas is, at least partially, due to increased confidence in rubble-mound structure designs. And this confidence is due to decades of experience and the resulting increased knowledge of structure design and construction. Improvement in local incident wave energy measurement and prediction also has helped. Finally, concrete armor performance is becoming more predictable as we learn in detail how armor layers respond both hydraulically and structurally. The above developments have led to more efficient concrete armor shapes and better performance. Abstract of topics from previous CERC publications are included. Topics include coastal engineering, dredging, shore protection, sediment transport, soil stabilization, and wind waves. (MM).

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has built and currently maintains 19 major concrete-armored breakwaters within the United States. Many of these have been surveyed to assess both the hydraulic and structural performance of the concrete armoring (Melby and Turk 1994). Maintenance of most of these structures has been in excess of original estimates, and there has been much speculation as to the causes of premature armor failure. The Corps has used several types of armor units for building and repairing these structures including the tetrapod tribar, and dolos. None of these has had exceptional performance. Now a new armor unit, Core-Loc(tm) (Figure 1), promises to be superior to those used in the past.
