Below normal temperatures prevailed all week in most of this area, with freezing wide spread in central and northern interior areas. Temperatures for the week averaged as much as 12° below normal in the central and northern Rockies. Elsewhere in the Nation, temperatures rose from below - normal levels at the begin ning of the period to midsummer levels by the end. Weekly averages were 3° to 6° above normal in the Ohio Valley, eastern Great Lakes region and the Northeast. Some northeastern sections reported near - record heat for so late in September.
