Due to the growing importance and complexity of company groups and a proceeding decentralisation, subsidiary controlling is becoming more and more important. Performance measurement systems are a key instrument of subsidiary controlling. The correct use of performance measures combined with the right incentives can help reduce information asymmetry between the corporate centre and subsidiaries and at the same time ensure an orientation toward corporate objectives on all levels. In this book, the concept of performance measurement systems in the context of subsidiary controlling is explained. One focus is the thorough discussion of financial performance measures and their use in subsidiary controlling. Particularities in subsidiary controlling are for instance the determination of divisional cost-of-capital for value-based management and the aggregation of measures to the corporate level. The second focus is the design of performance measurement systems depending on certain characteristics of the company and its environment. It is emphasised that there is not one right way of designing controlling systems. Instead, they have to be aligned to certain situational variables such as strategy, organisational structure or environmental uncertainty. For example, managers of business units that pursue differentiation strategies should be evaluated by more non-financial performance measures than managers of business units with a low-cost strategy. The book can be used as guidance for practitioners concerned with the design of performance measurement systems - for example corporate controllers, management consultants or investment managers in holding companies. It also provides a starting point for academics that intend to conduct further research on related topics.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Controlling, grade: 1,7, European Business School - International University Schlo Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, course: Seminar Controlling, 28 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Long before the globalisation had become a buzz word and an impetus for companies to invest abroad, enterprises enlarged their "business playing field" into foreign countries for various reasons, such as to capture a new market, to secure resources, or to take advantage of local cost levels. Therefore, subsidiaries are heavily involved in the value creation process for and within multinational corporations (MNCs). However, despite the fact that the measurement of performance is crucial for globally active companies not only in steering the value creation for the MNC but also, for example, in fostering international expansion or guiding resource allocation, MNCs differ significantly in the extent to which they are aware of the performance of their subsidiaries. Due to the fact that strategic decisions regarding the global expansion of a MNC require a wide and clear information basis to be able to assess how successfully a foreign subsidiary has conducted its business or under what possibly unfavourable environmental conditions the business results were achieved, multinational enterprises have to implement a system for evaluating the performance of their foreign subsidiaries and their management. Therefore, this paper aims to analyse the central aspects to consider in the evaluation of the performance of foreign subsidiaries. This paper is divided into five chapters. After a short introduction to the theoretical background of performance evaluation in chapter 2, the paper continues in chapter 3 with the central issues of an effective performance evaluation system for foreign subsidiaries with a clear focus on the aspect of separating managerial and subsidiary performance. Then chapter 4 illustrate

This book, first published in 1986, is concerned with the changing world environment for multinational business and the relationships between multinational parent companies and their subsidiaries which will be necessary to meet the challenges that are being faced. The study argues that key changes to the environment are: the revolution in manufacturing which has permitted cheap production in one location of complicated products for a world market; ‘world product mandating’, whereby all a company’s country subsidiaries produce different product lines for the world market; pressure and incentives from host governments for technology transfer in their favour and for research and development facilities within their territory; the growth of highly efficient international trading and distribution intermediaries; and the complications of increased ‘barter’ trade arising from international debt problems and currency shortages. All this means that the management of multinational subsidiaries has to change. This book reviews the challenges and shows a way forward.

Policymakers and program managers are continually seeking ways to improve accountability in achieving an entity's mission. A key factor in improving accountability in achieving an entity's mission is to implement an effective internal control system. An effective internal control system helps an entity adapt to shifting environments, evolving demands, changing risks, and new priorities. As programs change and entities strive to improve operational processes and implement new technology, management continually evaluates its internal control system so that it is effective and updated when necessary. Section 3512 (c) and (d) of Title 31 of the United States Code (commonly known as the Federal Managers? Financial Integrity Act (FMFIA)) requires the Comptroller General to issue standards for internal control in the federal government.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The goal of this essay is to study the crucial factors that affect managing of the subsidiaries and their role in the success of the TNCs, in their international cooperation. Most of the research on the specified issues was made at the level of the headquarters firm. A comprehensive approach has been adopted in the work, focusing on the parent-subsidiary perspectives, in order to understand more precisely whether these two sides reciprocally affect each other, in the entire process of creating, establishing and managing international cooperation. Nowadays inter-company collaborations for innovations have proven to be an influential method to provide the competitiveness around the world. This is particularly apparent in the case of large Transnational Companies (TNCs), who have invested capitals in setting up and enforcing many different kinds of strategic partnerships. A new phenomenon in this strategic process of decision-making employs the subsidiaries, mainly in developing cooperation on the international scale. The strategy allows the economic globalization, sought by many TNCs, resulted from having access and sharing the most reliable proficiencies with the targeted markets. This cooperation can arise, both intra-company, by contributing capital to enhance the available competences within the total TNC network, as well as inter-company, by involving horizontal counterparts (competitors and distributors) and vertical ones (participants of the industry’s supply chain). The present paper was impacted by the literature affirming that, in the case of the TNCs generating, gaining and diffusing knowledge may derive from the external as well as from the internal environment. The vital role of the subsidiaries in the whole process of international cooperation can influence the effective collaboration itself.
