The book Control Theory Fundamentals was compiled from the materials of a popular series of industrial seminars in control theory. The principal objective of the seminar was to present the fundamentals of control theory in a way accessible to practising engineers whose principal area of expertise often lay elsewhere. In addition to providing a resource for those attending the seminar, the book will be of interest to the wider audience of students and engineers who need to apply control theory in the course of their studies or work. The book provides a readable introduction to control of both continuous time and discrete time systems. The first four chapters of the book cover classical methods using transfer functions, while the remaining chapters cover analysis and design using state space methods. Worked examples are included to illustrate key topics in each section. The book contains five appendices; a review of matrix algebra, reference tables of Laplace and z transforms, supporting Matlab scripts, and a case study in controller design using state space methods.

This open access Brief introduces the basic principles of control theory in a concise self-study guide. It complements the classic texts by emphasizing the simple conceptual unity of the subject. A novice can quickly see how and why the different parts fit together. The concepts build slowly and naturally one after another, until the reader soon has a view of the whole. Each concept is illustrated by detailed examples and graphics. The full software code for each example is available, providing the basis for experimenting with various assumptions, learning how to write programs for control analysis, and setting the stage for future research projects. The topics focus on robustness, design trade-offs, and optimality. Most of the book develops classical linear theory. The last part of the book considers robustness with respect to nonlinearity and explicitly nonlinear extensions, as well as advanced topics such as adaptive control and model predictive control. New students, as well as scientists from other backgrounds who want a concise and easy-to-grasp coverage of control theory, will benefit from the emphasis on concepts and broad understanding of the various approaches. Taking a different approach from standard thousand-page reference-style control textbooks, Fundamentals of Linear Control provides a concise yet comprehensive introduction to the analysis and design of feedback control systems in fewer than 400 pages. The text focuses on classical methods for dynamic linear systems in the frequency domain. The treatment is, however, modern and the reader is kept aware of contemporary tools and techniques, such as state space methods and robust and nonlinear control. Featuring fully worked design examples, richly illustrated chapters, and an extensive set of homework problems and examples spanning across the text for gradual challenge and perspective, this textbook is an excellent choice for senior-level courses in systems and control or as a complementary reference in introductory graduate level courses. The text is designed to appeal to a broad audience of engineers and scientists interested in learning the main ideas behind feedback control theory.

This book contains a set of notes accompanying a short seminar in elementary control theory. An aim of the seminar is to present the fundamentals of control theory in a way accessible to engineers whose principal area of expertise may lie elsewhere. The purpose of the book is to provide an additional resource for the audience. Chapter 1 presents a review of the elementary mathematical results necessary for our further study. The concept of a linear system is introduced together with a review of differential equations and their solution using the method of Laplace transforms. The behaviour of classical first and second order systems is described in both the time and frequency domain. Chapter 2 examines the application of negative feedback from the perspective of the frequency domain. The Nyquist plot is developed as a powerful design tool in feedback control. We focus particularly on the role of the open loop transfer function in determining the ability of the control loop to follow a reference trajectory and to reject unwanted disturbances. A brief description of model uncertainty and robust control is also given. Chapter 3 is concerned with control system performance in the time domain. This is typically visualised in terms of a transient step response, the features of which are required to be optimised by adjusting terms in the controller. We then describe the root locus design method: a semi-graphical technique which provides insight into transient response based on the location of the closed loop roots in the complex plane. Chapter 4 deals with the theory of sampled systems, including an explanation of the z transform. An overview is provided of the mapping of the complex plane under discrete time transformation. Chapter 5 briefly covers the design of closed loop digital controllers. Two fundamental approaches are described: design using emulation attempts to replicate the performance of an existing prototype controller, while direct design methods conduct the entire design process in the digital domain. Finally, chapter 6 describes several issues and pit-falls which may confront the designer of digital control systems. Among the topics discussed are sample rate selection, phase shift arising from sample-to-output delay, signal reconstruction and aliasing.

This book aims to bring together the latest innovative knowledge, analysis, and synthesis of fractional control problems of nonlinear systems as well as some related applications. Fractional order systems (FOS) are dynamical systems that can be modelled by a fractional differential equation carried with a non-integer derivative. In the last few decades, the growth of science and engineering systems has considerably stimulated the employment of fractional calculus in many subjects of control theory, for example, in stability, stabilization, controllability, observability, observer design, and fault estimation. The application of control theory in FOS is an important issue in many engineering applications. So, to accurately describe these systems, the fractional order differential equations have been introduced.

An excellent introduction to feedback control system design, this book offers a theoretical approach that captures the essential issues and can be applied to a wide range of practical problems. Its explorations of recent developments in the field emphasize the relationship of new procedures to classical control theory, with a focus on single input and output systems that keeps concepts accessible to students with limited backgrounds. The text is geared toward a single-semester senior course or a graduate-level class for students of electrical engineering. The opening chapters constitute a basic treatment of feedback design. Topics include a detailed formulation of the control design program, the fundamental issue of performance/stability robustness tradeoff, and the graphical design technique of loopshaping. Subsequent chapters extend the discussion of the loopshaping technique and connect it with notions of optimality. Concluding chapters examine controller design via optimization, offering a mathematical approach that is useful for multivariable systems.

Motor control is a relatively young field of research exploring how the nervous system produces purposeful, coordinated movements in its interaction with the body and the environment through conscious and unsconscious thought. Many books purporting to cover motor control have veered off course to examine biomechanics and physiology rather than actual control, leaving a gap in the literature. This book covers all the major perspectives in motor control, with a balanced approach. There are chapters explicitly dedicated to control theory, to dynamical systems, to biomechanics, to different behaviors, and to motor learning, including case studies. Reviews current research in motor control Contains balanced perspectives among neuroscience, psychology, physics and biomechanics Highlights controversies in the field Discusses neurophysiology, control theory, biomechanics, and dynamical systems under one cover Links principles of motor control to everyday behaviors Includes case studies delving into topics in more detail
