The following topics are discussed in this volume: recent developments in operator theory, coherent states and wavelet analysis, geometric and topological methods in theoretical physics and quantum field theory, and applications of these methods of mathematical physics to problems in atomic and molecular physics as well as the world of the elementary particles and their fundamental interactions. Two extensive sets of lecture notes on quantization techniques in general, and quantum gauge theories and strings as an avenue towards quantum geometry, are also included. The volume should be of interest to anyone working in a field using the mathematical methods associated with any of these topics.

This book focuses on mathematical problems concerning different applications in physics, engineering, chemistry and biology. It covers topics ranging from interacting particle systems to partial differential equations (PDEs), statistical mechanics and dynamical systems. The purpose of the second meeting on Particle Systems and PDEs was to bring together renowned researchers working actively in the respective fields, to discuss their topics of expertise and to present recent scientific results in both areas. Further, the meeting was intended to present the subject of interacting particle systems, its roots in and impacts on the field of physics and its relation with PDEs to a vast and varied public, including young researchers. The book also includes the notes from two mini-courses presented at the conference, allowing readers who are less familiar with these areas of mathematics to more easily approach them. The contributions will be of interest to mathematicians, theoretical physicists and other researchers interested in interacting particle systems, partial differential equations, statistical mechanics, stochastic processes, kinetic theory, dynamical systems and mathematical modeling aspects.

Collecting together contributed lectures and mini-courses, this book details the research presented in a special semester titled “Geometric mechanics – variational and stochastic methods” run in the first half of 2015 at the Centre Interfacultaire Bernoulli (CIB) of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The aim of the semester was to develop a common language needed to handle the wide variety of problems and phenomena occurring in stochastic geometric mechanics. It gathered mathematicians and scientists from several different areas of mathematics (from analysis, probability, numerical analysis and statistics, to algebra, geometry, topology, representation theory, and dynamical systems theory) and also areas of mathematical physics, control theory, robotics, and the life sciences, with the aim of developing the new research area in a concentrated joint effort, both from the theoretical and applied points of view. The lectures were given by leading specialists in different areas of mathematics and its applications, building bridges among the various communities involved and working jointly on developing the envisaged new interdisciplinary subject of stochastic geometric mechanics.

The present workshop is aiming at the higher achievement of the studies of current topics ranging over differential geometry, Complex analysis and mathematical physics their future developments and their numerous applications. The present volume provides useful and significant information to the specialists in differential geometry, complex analysis and mathematical physics. It will be interesting also to a much broader audience of scholars and scientists working or interested in classical and quantum mechanics, in cell membranes, integrability and soliton interactions etc. Its geometric part includes homogeneous structures on almost contact metric spaces, geometric structures in four-manifolds and almost hermitian structures, complex connections on conformal Kähler manifolds, existence of compact hypersurfaces with the second fundamental form of constant length, linear Weingarten surfaces in a hyperbolic three-space, pre-contrast functions and their geometric properties, and further, fibre bundle formulation of Lagrangian quantum field theory, curvature forms and interaction of fields concerning geometrical setting in mathematical physics. The part on integrability and vector fields is devoted to the study of multicomponent nonlinear Schrodinger (MNLS) equations which play important role for understanding hydro-dynamical processes, the phenomena of Bose-Einstein condensates, etc. The symmetries of these MNLS equations are also studied, as well as their reductions and Lie algebraic properties. The third part of these proceedings treats problems of contemporary mechanics and mathematical physics. The methods of differential geometry quite unexpectedly provide important tool for modeling and studying microinjections in cell membranes, the equilibrium.
