Excerpt from Contemporary Belgian Literature The present sketch of contemporary Belgian litera ture lays no claim to completeness. Belgium to day teems with writers Of merit; and to have dealt adequately with all of them would have needed a series Of volumes padded with academic detail. The publisher and the author have for the moment no farther ambition than to stimulate interest, and to give information which is so sadly lacking in this country that some Of the most distinguished of Belgian poets are living in exile in London un noticed and without a welcome, making munitions (all honour to them), or living as they can. Excerpt from Contemporary Belgian Poetry: Selected and Translated Belgium is a country of mixed nationalities. The two languages spoken are Flemish and French. Flemish is a Low German dialect, the written form of which is identical with Dutch. Practically all educated Fleming's speak French, which is the official language; the French Belgians, who rarely know Flemish,1 are called Walloons. Only those authors who write in French are re presented in the present volume, and they may be classed as follows. Excerpt from Some Modern Belgian Writers: A Critical Study That is relating history from too romantic a point of View. Max Waller died of typhoid fever complicated by heart disease and his consumptive tendencies. As for Rodenbach, his exile can hardly be called one, for if he was well received in Paris, he remained to the last popular in Belgium. The only unkind note comes from one of his comrades, Jules Destree, who credits him with la prudence d'un lapin blond. We admit that for a long time the Belgian bourgeoisie rebelled against all intellectual culture, in that it is like many another bourgeoisie. When Camille Lemonnier writes: I assure you that at the time when Baude laire visited Brussels, and even a long time afterwards, these ideas would have appeared singularly paradoxical, no one imagines that it would be otherwise to-day. The idea that, say, rhythm and style are the movement of a mind in correspondence with the universe, is an idea which will never enter the head of the ordinary plain honest bourgeois who is very much taken up with his business, and whose relaxation is a game of dominoes with a glass of beer in a cafe. Excerpt from Belgium's Agony A Few weeks after the outbreak of war the newspapers, in an obscure paragraph, stated that German artillery had bombarded the Flemish village of Saint-Amand, near Antwerp. Nearly simultaneously, but in numerous and prominent columns, they described the wanton and ruthless destruction of the ancient university city of Louvain. Thirdly, on August 24, began the great British retreat from the line Mons-Conde, the retreat to south-westward that experts hold to rank among the finest military achievements of history. And between these three happenings there is a connecting link other than the tremendous struggle of which they form a part, a link to which subsequent events and, most of all, this little book have given a melancholy and tragic interest. Excerpt from Belgian Life in Town and Country It is a fact, which cannot be explained away, that Flemings and Walloons have never in the long course of their combined history, which commenced with the close of feudalism, engaged in a racial war, and this absence of strife has left an abiding impression on their relations. The strongest link, however, in the chain that connects the two peoples of the South Netherlands is provided by identity of religion; so that the most fruitful cause of all human differences and quarrels has never arisen to create a feud between Flemings and Walloons. There is, consequently, every reason to conclude that the two races, which in the past never came into hostile collision, are now well content to perform their duties together, and to be known as Belgians. When people talk of the Belgians as a modern people, with a history of only seventy-four years, they should not forget that the Flemings have scarcely changed in character, and not at all in their tongue, since the days of the Plantagenets; and that the Walloons, of Liege at least, are very much what they were in the time of the prince-bishops.
