Excerpt from Flora of Los Angeles and Vicinity As a student of the flora of southern California, the author has long felt the need of some one book containing descriptions of the native plants. While it is essential that one doing critical work should laboriously search through scattered literature, the average student, and especially the novice, will find such a course impossible. In an endeavor to supply this need, the author has written this book. Not that he feels that the flora is so well known that such a work will prove adequate for years to come, but rather to bring together what knowledge now exists concerning the systematic side of our most interesting plant life. That many mistakes must unavoidably occur, and that many plants are yet to be added, is clearly apprehended. The exact area included in this volume is the coast slope of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This territory comprises a large portion of the great southern California valley, as well as the following mountain ranges, in each of which is named the culminating point: Sierra Santa Monica (Castro Peak 3946 ft.), Sierra San Fernando (San Fernando Peak 3793 ft.), Sierra San Gabriel (Mt. Gleason 6493 ft., San Gabriel Peak 6172 ft., Mt. San Antonio 10080 ft.), Sierra Santa Ana (Santiago Peak 5675 ft.). A number of the more conspicuous and common plants of southern California not known to occur within our boundaries are included, however, so that the student will find that a great majority of the plants to be met with on the coast slope south of Point Conception are described. Excerpt from Composition of Common California Foothill Plants as a Factor in Range Management This bulletin reports a study of chemical characteristics of certain foot hill range plants commonly found in the interior valleys and on the coastal strip of California. Information obtained from such investigations should point the way to a more scientific approach to range revegetation and maintenance, and to a more accurate evaluation of the carrying capacity of the range. In half a century of grazing by domestic livestock conspicuous changes have taken place in the plant population of this vast grass-woodland area. In many instances the carrying capacity has declined sharply, and a portion of the top soil has been removed. Evidence points to the fact that a substantial proportion of the original perennial graminaceous species has been replaced by annual exotic grasses and other herbs of southern Europe; this accounts for the inclusion of many such species in this study. So conspicuous has been this transformation that future grazing management plans must be focused largely upon this relatively early-maturing vegetation. Excerpt from A Popular California Flora: Or, Manual of Botany for Beginners; Containing Descriptions of Flowering Plants Growing in Central California, and Westward to the Ocean, With Illustrated Introductory Lessons I have endeavored to prepare an inexpensive manual which will enable beginners in botany to determine the names of all plants with conspicuous flowers, that may be found growing wild in the Central Valley of California from Visalia to Marysville and through the Coast Ranges from Monterey to Ukiah. Over six hundred species of plants are characterized by descriptions condensed, for the most part, from Vol. I of the "California Botany," and Sereno Watson's "Revision of the North American Liliaccse." Valuable material has also been obtained from a "Revision of the Eriogoncoe," by Torrey and Gray, Gray's "Synoptical Flora of North America," and "Gray's Manual of Botany." Plants belonging to the Parsnip, Aster, "Willow, Oak and Pine Families, arc not described, being mostly too difficult for beginners, or of little interest to them. The Introductory Lessons are designed to show the learner how to study the growth of plants, as well as to give such knowledge of their structure as will enable him to understand the descriptions in the Flora. The "Glossary of Generic and Specific Names" will enable the student to make appropriate common names for most plants. To the authors, whose works have furnished the materials for this book, is due the credit for whatever of excellence it may possess; to the compiler, who may, in a few cases, have misrepresented these authors, attaches the blame for most of its defects. I am indebted for suggestions and criticisms to Prof. E. Hilgard, "Or. C. L. Anderson, Prof. W. II. Brewer and Dr. Asa Gray. To the latter I am especially grateful for his kind interest in my humble work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
