Excerpt from The Consolations of Purgatory There is nothing in the world more common than affliction, and nothing is more vain and frivolous than the consolations which are most frequently offered to dry the tears of those in sorrow. There is no true or solid consolation except in religion, especially when the sorrow is caused by the loss of some dearly loved friend. How many mourners have declared that they could be reconciled to the separation if only they knew that their dead friends were happy, if someone would unveil for them the mysteries of the world beyond the grave! Only religion with its Gospel and its revelations, the religion of Christ with its great dogmas of Purgatory and the Communion of Saints, can give them the enlightenment they desire. T HERE is nothing in this world more common than affliction, and nothing is more vain and frivolous than the consolations which are most frequently offered to dry the tears of those in sorrow. It tells us that if our dead friends are in heaven, they are in possession of a happiness which nothing on earth can equal, and that if they are still in purgatory, we, by our prayers and good works, can make satisfaction for them, relieve their sufferings, and shorten the time of their detention. This little work is intended to comfort those who are in sorrow by showing them what consolation is to be found in devotion to the holy souls; and for that purpose it presents the doctrine of the Church according to the writings of her holy Fathers and Doctors and the revelations of the Saints

Excerpt from The Consolations of Purgatory All these figures. Are chosen to remind us of the quickness of the passage of human life, but this is not the only thing we have to deplore in it, for the Scripture tells us also that life is' full of misery, suffering, and tears, from the hour when a man first opens his eyes upon the world until he closes them in death. After a week of hearing ghostly noises, a man is visited in his home by the spirit of his mother, dead for three decades. She reproaches him for his dissolute life and begs him to have Masses said in her name. Then she lays her hand on his sleeve, leaving an indelible burn mark, and departs... A Lutheran minister, no believer in Purgatory, is the puzzled recipient of repeated visitations from "demons" who come to him seeking prayer, consolation, and refuge in his little German church. But pity for the poor spirits overcomes the man's skepticism, and he marvels at what kind of departed souls could belong to Christ and yet suffer still... Hungry Souls recounts these stories and many others trustworthy, Church-verified accounts of earthly visitations from the dead in Purgatory. Accompanying these accounts are images from the "Museum of Purgatory" in Rome, which contains relics of encounters with the Holy Souls, including numerous evidences of hand prints burned into clothing and books; burn marks that cannot be explained by natural means or duplicated by artificial ones. Riveting!

Henri Faure examines the concepts of Christian purgatory, and how believers must mourn their lost friends and family, while praying for their salvation and receival by the Lord God. Designed as an aid to comfort recently bereaved families, The Consolations of Purgatory was well-received upon its original publication in France. Translated here to English by W. Humphrey Page, we discover a manual informed by the author's scholarship in Christian subjects, but also his experiences in speaking with and consoling believers who had recently lost somebody near to them. A tone of warm reassurance and guidance defines this book, and its humanity resonates to the modern day. Much of this work concentrates on how to treat souls that are presently in purgatory; what good deeds and works can be done to aid their passage in the afterlife, and what prayers and condolences the living may offer to assist those departed. Christian virtues such as charity and good will are frequently alluded to, with the author also embarking on an examination of scripture for insight into apparitions of spirits that remain within purgatory.
