La investigación está estructurada en dos partes: en la primera, se recogen los diferentes postulados teóricos respecto a las estrategias y el aprendizaje del alumno; además, se incluyen aspectos legislativos que rigen el sistema educativo y que son relevantes para desarrollar un programa de investigación como el que se presenta en esta tesis. El segundo apartado consiste en dos investigaciones empíricas: en el primero, se muestran los resultados obtenidos tras la aplicación de un programa de estrategias metacognitivas de aprendizaje partiendo de una muestra de 177 estudiantes que cursan la secundaria obligatoria o el Bachillerato y recurriendo a un diseño cuasi experimental pretest-postest con grupo de control. El segundo estudio, en el cual se seleccionan 472 alumnos entre estudiantes universitarios y de secundaria, consiste en comprobar en qué medida los alumnos que los alumnos que han estudiado con distintos sistemas educativos (el establecido por la Ley General de Educación y Financiamiento de la Reforma Educativa de 1970 y el que implanta la Ley Orgánica de Ordenación General del Sistema Educativo de 1990) y que cursan diferentes etapas muestran diferencias en el empleo de estrategias de aprendizaje, es decir, han recibido una formación más dirigida a los procesos que a los contenidos, pretendiendo conseguir el aprender a aprender.
