Zusammenfassung: This book offers a clinical and surgical overview on congenital brain malformations, which are abnormalities that occur during fetal development, leading to brain defects and disorders. The fetal brain begins to develop shortly after conception and continues to grow throughout pregnancy. This book covers the various congenital brain malformations, their aetiologies and development, diagnosis and management including possible surgical interventions and details of these procedures. Since many of these disorders are rare, they do not have a final cure and their management is important - their consequences on the physical, psychological and developmental condition of the patient are great. This book is of interest to pediatric surgeons and neurologists

Offering a new and uniquely multidisciplinary approach to malformations of the brain, this book begins with definitions that clarify the different types of malformations. Since malformations occur in a forming brain, neuroembryology and some of the genes guiding normal development are discussed. Causes of malformations--abnormal chromosomes, Mendelian genetics and external teratogens-- are reviewed. After this basic knowledge has been put in place, each "user-friendly" chapter synthesizes the neuropathology, specific embryology related to the pathology to the malformation, and what is known of possible causes and mechanisms by which the malformation occurs. Each chapter also describes the clinical, radiological, chromosomal and genetic aspects of the malformation. The central nervous system in twins and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is also considered. Generously illustrated, this volume contains instructive pictures of fetal malformations. The chapter on migration disorders contains many gross and microscopic photographs. Destructive lesions, perinatal hemorrhagic and hypoxic-ischemic lesions and early neonatal degenerations are considered in order to differentiate them from malformations. The book concludes with an appendix listing gene loci which have so far been identified for various malformations.

Computed tomography (CT) interpretation of congenital malformations of the brain can be quite a difficult and an intimidating task. This book has been written to help allay that intimidation and make CT interpretation of these disorders easier. The embryologic and pathogenetic aspects of these malformations are not clearly defined in every instance; I have tried to present in this work these aspects as I understand them. I hope I have accomplished my objective. Acknowledgments I gratefully acknowledge the superb editorial assistance of Joan Wallace, manuscript typing by Eve VanDine and Susan Morrissey, and the preparation of the illustrations by Tom McCarthy and Ann Curley. Last, but not least, I appreciate the understanding shown by my family during the long preparation of this work. Contents page Dedication ... v Preface ..., vi Acknowledgments ... vii Chapter 1. This superbly illustrated textbook, endorsed by the European Society of Neuroradiology, explains in detail the clinical importance of neuroradiology in complementing history taking and physical examination during the workup of patients suspected of having neurological, neurosurgical, or psychiatric disorders. The role of imaging of the brain and spinal cord is described across the full range of relevant conditions, including, for example, cerebrovascular diseases, trauma, CSF disorders, developmental malformations, autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, tumors and tumor-like conditions, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic conditions, and bipolar and depressive disorders. The structured approach to imaging and image analysis will ensure that the book is an invaluable resource for neuroradiologists in training and clinicians alike. Starting from the clinical indication, suggestions for imaging protocols are provided and checklists of common findings and aspects key to interpretation are presented. The book is published within the SpringerReference program, which combines thorough coverage with access to living editions constantly updated via a dynamic peer-review process.
