Neither celebrity-gawk, “misery memoir,” nor confessional melodrama, A Berkshire Boyhood is more reminiscent of such memoirs as Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life and Emily Fox Gordon’s Are You Happy? In fact, A Berkshire Boyhood will strike readers as a parallel universe to Gordon’s book, her own story of growing up in Williamstown, Massachusetts, as a privileged faculty brat and young girl in the 1950s. Berkshire Boyhood is a boy’s story of growing up from working class roots in that same place and time. It explores family troubles arising out of the wounds and separations of World War II, ethnic religiosity, and adolescent sexuality (1950s variety). Its deeper appeal comes from our curiosity about the 1950s and the Boomer generation, from the fraught relations between that generation and their parents, who fought WWII, from our interest in the influence of landscape on human development, and from a vision of post-war years as a decade seething with the anger and dissent of an incipient counterculture that would explode the sixties.

The book begins at 3 a.m near Marina Del Rey. I was found unconscious at the wheel of my 1973 Volkswagen bus. Rocky had met Network on the Twentieth Century Fox lot where fear propelled me into that bus past the Darth Vader greeter at the gate. I began work as a driver at the Fox studio in the fall of 1977. Bad times seemed behind me, PR jobs, house disappeared in New York. Wife and daughter left after film school. I was 31, full of hope with a screenplay in hand. I just wanted to eat free food on sets and maybe date a lovely extra. They offered me two jobs. One with a dangerous old alcoholic on his last legs gassing executives cars and the other a set up for embezzlement under my signature. Insanity led to a three building collision of rumors which caused the death of my cinderella Hollywood story, cancellation of the movie deal. As I was blackballed by the teamsters, the unemployment office asked me why. The state then audited all of the Star Wars money at Twentieth Century Fox. I told the Beverly Hills psychiatrist paid through medical "this is an unbelievable story." He agreed. After recovering slowly in San Francisco I vomited up the seventies on a bus headed for Tahoe for a chance to dream again.

"Baby Boomer" author and newspaper publisher Philip Burrow takes a heartfelt, and sometimes painful, nostalgic look at being raised in the 50's by his grandparents at a small, backwoods farm in rural North Carolina. In this first-person account, he also delves into the life and family pottery business of his great-grandfather, William Henry Chriscoe, one of the early potters of the modern day Pottery Mecca of Seagrove, NC. Many nostalgic photos of the Chriscoe family are included, some dating back to the early 1900's. You will enjoy this book if: - You fondly remember your aging grandparents, great-uncles, and great-aunts - You were raised by grandparents or someone other than your parents - You like reading of a time when life was slower - You grew up on a small farm - You grew up in the country - You like reading about the "Good old days" - You suffered abuse as a child - You are a parent considering divorce - You are interested in living off the land - You are an "Old-time" Southerner - You appreciate the "Self-sufficiency" lifestyle - You are interested in early North Carolina pottery - You've never shucked a bushel of corn - You've never raised chickens - You've never castrated a pig - You've never sat on an outdoor privy seat and gotten a cold butt in freezing weather - You've never had the run of a home and farm with goats, mules, cows, dogs, cats, kids, and other grand-kids -- a trusting home where relatives and farm neighbors popped in unannounced almost daily by just opening a generally unlocked door. Being raised by grandparents of another generation was an experience to never be forgotten, according to the author. But sometimes being shuffled back and forth between a mother and grandparents was painful and fraught with mixed emotions and feelings. Nevertheless, to have had "a foot in two generations," was a privilege today savored by the author.
