CONCERT MUSIC FOR BANDS (Volume 2) includes two pieces suitable for high school, community, and college bands, grade level 4. The book includes conductor full score and parts for each individual instrument. CLOUD RIDER: This ominous piece is confident and determined, a mysterious journey undertaken by a being not bound to the earth. The emotions evoked vary throughout and the path taken is intricate, but it continually returns to the main theme which implies constant motion and forging ahead at all costs into an unknown eventuality. RAGTIME SALOON: Listeners are taken away to a dark but joyful watering hole of yesteryear where the spirits flow freely and the good times are enjoyed in excess. Syncopated rhythms are reminiscent of the earliest days of jazz, and the melody is unforgettable. M.C.S.

Arranging for the Concert Band and the separately available workbook are intended to introduce students to basic techniques of arranging for the concert band. Arranging can be divided into two separate processes. The first deals with scoring and transcribing. Scoring is concerned with such things as voicing, doubling, balance and color. The term scoring also means the actual writing of notes on the score paper. Transcribing is scoring music written for one kind of musical instrument or group -- say a piano or orchestra -- for a different kind of group. This text deals with those matters. The second part of arranging is the more creative process of writing introductions, modulations, endings, background figures and so on.

CONCERT MUSIC FOR BANDS (Volume 3) includes two grade level 6 band pieces suitable for high school, college, and for professional bands. The book includes full score for the conductor and parts for each individual instrument. PYRRHIC DANCE: Inspired by dances depicted on ancient Greek plates and vases, this complex and brooding score reflects the conflicting moods felt by warriors as they demonstrated their physical strength and agility before heading off to battle. It is proud and celebratory, yet foreshadows the uncertainty that lay ahead. GERANOS DANCE: A tune custom-made for Greek folk dancing, with communal spirit and an upbeat, optimistic outlook. There is constant implied motion that grows more and more hectic as the dancers, all holding hands in a circle, would weave together and tie themselves into knots. Any knot that is tied, however, must eventually be untied. And so the joyful dance continues... Michael C. Sembos
