This book provides a detailed examination of how two key concerns in many communities across the globe- power and water- can be simultaneously addressed through the coupling of Concentrating Solar Power and Desalination (CSP+D) plants. It undertakes a technological and economic evaluation of the integration of Multi-effect Distillation Plants into CSP plants based on Parabolic Trough solar collectors (PT-CSP+MED), as compared to independent water and power production through Reverse Osmosis unit connection to a CSP plant (CSP+RO). Through this compare and contrast method of analysis, the author establishes guidelines to assist readers in identifying cases wherein PT-CSP+MED systems provide greater benefits from a thermodynamic and economic point of view. The text outlines efficiencies and challenges derived from the combination of PT-CSP power generation with four different desalination plant scenarios, beginning with a description of the equations used in the modeling and validation of a pilot MED plant and followed by detailed thermodynamic analysis of several currently operating CSP+D systems. Comparative thermodynamic assessments are based on a sensitivity analysis from which the overall efficiency of the cogeneration system is determined. The author outlines all the equations used for the modeling of each component and includes 97 comparative tables obtained from the sensitivity analysis, showing the variation of the overall thermal efficiency of the CSP+D as a function of fundamental parameters of the cogeneration cycle, such as the specific electric consumption of the desalination plants, and the turbine outlet temperature of the power cycle. These findings are then placed in practical context through a complete thermo-economic analysis, which is carried out for two specific locations in the Middle East and Europe in order to identify the most practically and economically viable CSP+D system in each region as informed by actual operating conditions, meteorological data and real cost figures for each location.

What Is Concentrated Solar Power Concentrated solar power systems create solar electricity by focusing a huge area of sunlight onto a receiver via the use of mirrors or lenses to concentrate the sunlight. The focused light is turned into heat, which either drives a heat engine that is coupled to an electrical power generator or powers a thermochemical process. This heat then drives an electrical power generator, which results in the generation of electricity. Worldwide, nearly 1.1 billion people lack access to potable water. Sea restrains abundant water mass. Desalination processes provide an excellent way to tackle the water scarcity in places close to the sea. It would be feasible to address the water shortage problem with seawater desalination. The use of desalination plants in these regions is becoming a technological way to produce freshwater. Conventional means of providing potable water, especially from fossil fuel, is becoming increasingly expensive and is unaffordable by the poorest countries of the world where water and sanitation is a major challenge. There is a need to find viable alternative sources of energy. The use of solar energy in desalination processes is one of the most promising answers to the water crisis. Solar energy is rich in many of the poorest parts of the world where access to potable water is a challenge; it is reasoned that this is the best and most viable option. The good reason for the implementation of solar powered desalination systems is due to energy storage; concentrating solar power plants can provide round-the-clock firm capacity that is appropriate for large scale desalination.

Application of advanced computer-oriented techniques are necessary in the synthesis, design analysis and operation of a complex integrated plant to produce power and freshwater, by desalting seawater or brackish water, at higher efficiency and lower cost. These are the two vital commodities to maintains sustainability of life, particularly in the arid regions where natural freshwater supply is either totally lacking or has become scarce. Even in the regions with polluted water resources, such a system is required to support life. At the same time, the available energy should be put to maximum use and life-cycle analysis is essential to ensure sustainability of the systems. The contributors of this book, experts in their own respective fields, outline the various techniques enriched by their experience. The contents of the book would, therefore, be of great interest not only to designers and operators of dual-purpose power-desalination plants but also to educators and researchers as well serve as a valuable source of information to those engaged in other areas of processing industry. The book is motivated by the growing importance of integrated power and desalination plants in general and in their respective regions in particular, and the long felt need for an authoritative book on the subject. After a long gap of more than two decades following the publication of "Principles of Desalination" Spiegler and Laird in 1980, this book would be a welcome addition to the literature in the field to serve as a valuable guide and reference to all those who are concerned with the integration of power and desalination plants. It will also serve as a valuable source of information to those in the processing industry in general.
