The SRI Image Understanding program is a broad effort spanning the entire range of machine vision research. Three major concerns are: (1) to develop a computational description of the physics and mathematics of the vision process; (2) to develop a knowledge-based framework for interpreting sensed (imaged) data; and (3) to develop a machine-based environment for effective experimentation, demonstration, and evaluation of our theoretical results, as well as providing a vehicle for technology transfer. This final report summarizes progress in these and related areas. (Author).

The SRI Image Understanding program is a broad effort spanning the entire range of machine vision research. Its three major concerns are: (1) to develop an understanding of the physics and mathematics of the vision process, (2) to develop a knowledge-based framework for integrating and reasoning about sensed (imaged) data, and (3) to develop a machine-based environment for effective experimentation, demonstration, and evaluation of our theoretical results, as well as providing a vehicle for technology transfer. This report describes recent process in all three areas. In particular, we describe progress in constructing and testing a state-of-the-art automated system for stereo compilation, new approaches to extracting depth and structural information from imaged data, a knowledge-based system for feature extraction, and tools for scene modeling and interaction with a machine terrain data base. The authors' principal objective in this research program has been to obtain solutions to fundamental problems in computer vision that have broad military relevance, particularly in the areas of cartography and photo interpretation. Now-completed research has been directed towards developing automated techniques for stereo-compilation, delineation of linear features, scene partitioning, image matching, and image to database correspondence. In addition to their own research, the authors have designed and implemented an integrated testbed system that incorporates results of research produced throughout the Image Understanding community. This system provides a coherent framework for demonstration and evaluation of the accomplishments of DARPA's Image Understanding program, thereby facilitating transfer of this technology to appropriate military organizations.
