Excerpt from Composition of Common California Foothill Plants as a Factor in Range Management This bulletin reports a study of chemical characteristics of certain foot hill range plants commonly found in the interior valleys and on the coastal strip of California. Information obtained from such investigations should point the way to a more scientific approach to range revegetation and maintenance, and to a more accurate evaluation of the carrying capacity of the range. In half a century of grazing by domestic livestock conspicuous changes have taken place in the plant population of this vast grass-woodland area. In many instances the carrying capacity has declined sharply, and a portion of the top soil has been removed. Evidence points to the fact that a substantial proportion of the original perennial graminaceous species has been replaced by annual exotic grasses and other herbs of southern Europe; this accounts for the inclusion of many such species in this study. So conspicuous has been this transformation that future grazing management plans must be focused largely upon this relatively early-maturing vegetation. Excerpt from Range Grasses of California To apply the best methods of range management, the stockman must be able to judge the condition of the range for himself. To do this he must know the principal forage plants, their period of life, and their requirements as to reproduction. The illustrated keys, brief descriptions, and pictures of the plants should assist him in this. The purpose of this bulletin is (1) to familiarize stockmen with the more important grasses of the State and show where they grow, and (2) to point out their forage value and the conditions under which the different kinds reproduce under grazing. This is a necessary pre liminary to the development of state-wide range reseeding methods now under investigation. In the preparation of this paper the authors have made use of the valuable collections and data in the grass herbarium of the United States Department of Agriculture. Several Of the illustrations were lent by the Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Check List of Plants of the San Joaquin Experimental Range The San Joaquin Experimental Range is located near the center of the State in the granite-soil section of the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is in Madera County, 28 miles north of Fresno, California. This h6oo-acre experimental area was established in 193k as a branch station of the California Forest and Range Experiment Station, U. 8. Forest Service. Research aimed at increased production from California foothill range through improved management, fertilization, brush control, and livestock management has been carried out since establishment. The area lies in the annual grass type and is characterized by grassy rolling hills with a sparse covering of trees and occasional dense stands of brush. It is in the lower part of the woodland zone between the treeless valley floor and the higher brush and timber belts. The herbaceous ground cover consists mostly of annual grasses and forbs. In contrast, perennials dominate most western range areas. Ecologically speaking, the area is near the lower limits of the Upper Sonoran Zone. The elevation varies from 700 to 1700 feet, with most of the area lying between 1000 and 1500 feet. Exposures are generally southwesterly.
